Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. Additionally, please note that the Length Check shows the minimum word count requirement of 250 words is not met, as the response contains 245 words. While the writer attempts to discuss how private cars affect our lives and mentions negative effects, the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the prompt asks whether the effects tend to be positive or negative, but the student only briefly touches on helpful aspects and then focuses heavily on pollution and traffic congestion without fully exploring a clear overall position or extending the arguments with specific personal examples. The conclusion also merely repeats the introduction rather than summarising the main points effectively. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure all parts of the prompt are explored in greater depth, provide fully developed supporting examples, and meet the minimum length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident in the text, such as the use of transitional markers like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude', but there is no clear overall progression of ideas throughout the essay. Paragraphing is attempted, but the conclusion fails to effectively summarise the arguments, instead inappropriately stating that the essay 'will discuss' what has already been presented. Furthermore, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'the first reason is that, the private cars are influenced the way of living because cost and time consuming'. Pronoun referencing and linking between sentences occasionally lack precision, which disrupts the logical flow. To improve, the writer needs to ensure a smoother logical progression between paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'environmental pollution', 'traffic congestion', and 'emergency situations', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include spelling errors like 'yeras' instead of years and 'thier' instead of their, as well as lexical inaccuracies such as 'the private cars effect' instead of affect, and 'time consuming' used as a noun phrase. Repetition of basic phrases like 'private cars' and 'excessive use' also restricts the lexical range. To achieve a higher band, the writer should expand their vocabulary range, pay closer attention to word forms and collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'private cars has become' and 'this trend have some negative effects', as well as article and preposition errors like 'in a emergency situations' and 'delay for going to work'. Other errors include awkward passive or active confusions such as 'private cars are influenced the way of living' and non-standard relative clauses or participial phrases like 'while using the private cars is that environmental pollution'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must improve control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and increase the accuracy of complex sentence forms.
