Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, the number of people depend on private cars for commute one place to another. However, using a private car is comfortable for some people. On the other hand, its leads lazy lifestyle. This essay has both negative and positive sides.

To begin with, nowadays people use more private cars as transportation because they can save their precious time as car is one of the fastest means of transportation; people do not need to wait for buses or trains or stand in line. For example, these days, ride-sharing applications are becoming very popular because in these apps people get a ride in reasonable price and get fast service. Automatically, public transport is becoming less advantageous for the public nowadays.

On the opposite side, it is having a negative effect on people's health because they become more lazy they no longer need to walk for bus stops which make them obese. When they walk, they burn their calories. Apart from this, when they use private cars, it creates more pollution and traffic, which worsens air quality and makes roads more congested. For instance, in last few years, people are getting asthma in France because of poor air quality. Thus, using personal vehicles can have a negative effect on our surroundings.

In conclusion, depending on private cars for transportation has both merits and demerits because on the positive side, travellers can get more convenience in their private vehicles. However, the environment can be damaged by using them as private transport.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the positive and negative ways reliance on private cars affects our lives. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For example, while the point about saving time and ride-sharing applications is clear, the discussion regarding health impacts and pollution in the body paragraphs is somewhat generalised and lacks deep extension. The position is evident throughout, and the main arguments are relevant to the prompt, yet the overall depth of support places this performance securely at this level, as some ideas remain slightly under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at progression through distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs addressing positive and negative aspects, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the opposite side', and 'In conclusion' are employed to structure the response, which reflects elements of a higher band. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, and certain transitions feel abrupt, preventing it from achieving a fully seamless logical flow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'precious time', 'ride-sharing applications', and 'poor air quality'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'depend' instead of 'depends', 'commute one place to another' missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing like 'its leads lazy lifestyle'. These lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the score because precision and control in word choice and collocation are inconsistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structural variety. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'the number of people depend', missing articles, and run-on structures such as 'they become more lazy they no longer need to walk'. Punctuation is also occasionally weak. These errors are recurrent enough to prevent a higher rating, but they rarely impede overall comprehension, fitting the criteria for this band well.
