Student answer (Band 6.0)

Cars play a crucial role in every day lives and it has become increasingly popular in recent years. Personal cars provide comfort, convenience and beneficial for longer journeys. However, I believe this trend tends to be negative development because it leads to traffic congestion and environmental problems.

One of the major affects by owining a car is that it provides freedom. This is largely because people can travel to their workplace, meetings, shopping and tourist attractions whenever they want. They do not need to depend on public transport which gives them a sense of independance. Additionally, cars also protect people from extreme weather conditions such as winter and summer and allow individuals to spend quality time together with their families while travelling. For example, an individual can travel to their workplace by car which is located outside the city. Therefore, cars is practical soultion for travelling to rural areas which allows people to save time and reduce dependance on public transport.

I believe this trend is negative for the whole society. The major reason is that it leads to traffic congestion. More cars on the street means more traffic on the roads which leads to long travelling time and rise stress and anxiety among daily travellers. In addition, cars emisson is very dangerful for the environment because it emits carbon dioxide which leads to air pollution. For instance, in cities like Mumbai, traffic congestion is one of the main concerns because every person use their private vehicles for travelling.

In conclusion, cars provide convenience and comfort and makes individuals lives easier, however I believe this is negative development because it leads to traffic congestions and environmental concerns. The governments should improve public transport amd run awareness campaigns, so majoirty of people use public transport and private cars remains available for longer journeys or in bad conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing ways reliance on private cars affects our lives and clearly stating a position that the effects tend to be negative. The ideas presented are generally relevant, covering personal freedom, convenience, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution. However, while some points like traffic congestion are reasonably well-developed with examples such as mentioning Mumbai, other ideas remain somewhat under-developed or broad, such as the general statements about protecting people from extreme weather. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend and fully develop all supporting points with more specific, detailed examples rather than relying on brief generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced into separate paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct theme such as personal benefits versus societal drawbacks. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, for instance, using repetitive linking devices like 'addition' and basic transitions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but the progression between sentences could be smoother. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing across sentences is consistently clear without relying on repetitive structures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points regarding private transport. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'traffic congestion', 'convenience', and 'independent', demonstrating a reasonable range. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that slightly impede communication, including 'every day lives' instead of 'everyday lives', 'owining' instead of 'owning', 'independance' instead of 'independence', 'soultion' instead of 'solution', 'emisson' instead of 'emission', 'dangerful' instead of 'dangerous', and 'majoirty' instead of 'majority'. To improve, the writer must expand their control over less common lexical items and improve proofreading to eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'because people can travel...' and 'which allows people to save time'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues in 'cars is practical soultion' and 'every person use', missing articles in 'makes individuals lives', and punctuation lapses in compound sentences. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach the next level, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over agreement and article usage.
