Student answer (Band 6.5)

In order to fulfill the job requirements of commute and manage time effectively, large number of people depend on private vehicles specially in large cities instead of unreliable public transportation. Although it offers convenience and flexibility, I believe it to be negative development that impacts air quality and traffic congestion.

Reliance on privately owned vehicles has offered more convenience and made transportation much smoother by reduction in the commuting hours. Due to its afforability it has convenienced average income group to take the advantage of its flexibility. So rather than waiting for infrequent public transportations which takes hours of the commuting time people now prefer to access this facility in order to manage their time. For instance even school kids prefer to use bicycles as it offers independence and flexibility.

However, there are certain adverse effects of this trend which include the worsening of air quality, traffic congestion makes it difficult even for emergency vehicles to make commute on time. Due to emissions of carbon monoxide and other harmful gases many older age people suffer more asthma and other breathing problems. Furthermore, it has increased demand for fuels which are on the verge of extinction. Consequently, this all lead to poor quality of life.

To recapitulate, reliance on private vehicles has certainly benefitted people in terms of convenience and reliability , though its negative consequences like air pollution and traffic congestion certainly outweigh its advantages hence, I believe it to be a negative development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and maintain a clear view that the overall effects are negative, while acknowledging convenience and flexibility as benefits. The discussion of pollution, congestion, and health impacts is relevant, and the example of older people experiencing breathing problems helps explain one consequence. However, some points are not fully developed: the schoolchildren-and-bicycles example does not clearly illustrate reliance on private cars, and the claim that cars reduce commuting hours is asserted without explaining when or why. The response also falls six words short of the required minimum. To strengthen the response, develop each example more directly and explain the effects on daily life with specific reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your position, the body paragraphs present benefits and drawbacks, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Paragraphing is appropriate, and transitions such as “Although,” “However,” “Furthermore,” and “Consequently” help signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less clear within the paragraphs. For example, the shift from private cars to “school kids” using bicycles does not follow the point about car convenience, and “this all” in the final body paragraph has an unclear reference. A few linking phrases also feel formulaic. Make sure each example directly supports the sentence before it, and use precise references to keep the argument’s progression smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “air quality,” “traffic congestion,” “emissions,” “flexibility,” and “reliance,” which allows you to discuss both benefits and costs. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “carbon monoxide” and “infrequent public transportation.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “afforability,” “convenienced,” and “older age people” are not natural or accurate forms. Some collocations are also awkward, including “manage the job requirements of commute” and “make commute on time.” Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully. This would make your ideas clearer and demonstrate more controlled use of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a relative clause in “transportations which takes hours.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “large number of people” needs an article, and “public transportations which takes” has a plural subject with a singular verb. In “traffic congestion makes it difficult even for emergency vehicles,” the sentence structure does not clearly connect congestion to the preceding list. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as shown by the space before the comma in “reliability , though.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures with clearer control.
