Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is an undeniable fact that nowadays phones play an important role in everyday communications. Some people argue that the use of smartphones while driving is dangerous therefore should be prohibited by law. I agree with this notion up to great extent as using phones while driving can cause road accidents. However, sometimes there are urgent calls to attend, therefore the use of phones should not be completely banned.
To begin with, it is true that nowadays most of the road accidents occur because the drivers are found using phones while driving. When people use a phone to attend a call, their mind gets diverted. Therefore, they loose focus in the driving. Consequently, it can lead to accidents and injuries and sometimes resulting deaths. For example, in report published by Times in India, it has been stated that in last year, about 77% road accidents happened due to the use of smartphones by drivers.
On the other hand, we should not ignore that sometimes there are urgent phone calls which need immediate attention.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 173 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you present a clear position, the argument is underdeveloped. You mention that phone use should not be completely banned due to 'urgent calls,' but you do not elaborate on how this could be safely managed (e.g., hands-free devices or pulling over). The essay ends abruptly without a conclusion, meaning the task is not fully addressed. To improve, you must expand your supporting arguments with more depth and ensure you provide a clear, balanced conclusion that summarizes your stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Therefore,' and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, the progression of the argument is hindered by the lack of a proper conclusion and the abrupt ending. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is incomplete, which disrupts the logical flow of the response. To achieve a higher band, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that the essay concludes with a summary that reinforces your main argument, rather than leaving the reader mid-sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'prohibited,' 'undeniable fact,' and 'diverted.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'loose focus' (should be 'lose focus') and 'resulting deaths' (should be 'resulting in deaths'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to road safety and legislation, and ensure you are using words in their correct grammatical form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'up to great extent' (should be 'to a great extent') and 'in report published' (should be 'in a report published'). There are also issues with article usage and verb forms. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall fluency. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
