Student answer (Band 7.5)
Mobile phones distract people while driving, which often results in accidents and is dangerous to use . So, some people prefer to make the use of cell phones illegal for drivers. However, I disagree with the opinion and believe that mobile phones could serve a good purpose while driving if used with caution.
One main reason why the use of mobile phones by drivers should not be illegal is the accessibility it provides. Most people are usually unaware of the road traffic and routes these days to travel, especially long routes. Mobile phone maps provide accurate directions with real time informations about traffic and any road closures, which would help minimise their travel time. So, mobile phone connectivity would help people to reach their destinations without any delay.
Personal safety and connectivity could also benefits of cell-phones while driving. If drivers have mobile phones, they can use them in case of any emergency, such as a fuel shortage or a minor accident, to take immediate action and call someone to assist. Also, sharing their live location through their phones would help inform family members and employers about the driver's location in case of any emergency. Therefore, without mobile phones, drivers might struggle to get help in emergencies.
However, cell phones could be beneficial as long as it could be used responsibly by drivers. Holding a phone in their hands would not only be dangerous to the driver, but also it can create crashes for others on the roads. Mobile phones should be either connected to CarPlay or should be in a phone holder in any vehicle to make it hands-free to use maps. Additionally, headsets or putting calls on speakerphone would also be useful to attend any important calls. These actions would prevent irresponsible behaviour of drivers using phones behind the wheels.
To sum up, although mobile phones could be dangerous while driving, making it illegal would not be a perfect idea because of the benefits it provides. Instead, imposing strict penalties and fines would help prevent illegal use of phones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position against a total ban and providing supporting arguments. The ideas are relevant, focusing on navigation and safety. However, the development is slightly uneven; while the points about navigation and emergency assistance are clear, the argument regarding 'responsible use' in the fourth paragraph borders on agreeing with the premise that distraction is dangerous, which slightly weakens the consistency of the argument. Overall, the position is well-maintained, and the response provides sufficient support for the arguments presented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'One main reason', 'Additionally', and 'To sum up' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'real time informations', 'road closures', and 'hands-free'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make the use of cell phones illegal' (instead of 'ban the use') and 'create crashes' (instead of 'cause accidents'). Despite these, the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, and the student attempts to use more sophisticated phrasing to support their arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'could benefits of' (should be 'could be benefits of') and 'as long as it could be used' (subject-verb agreement with 'phones'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are occasional issues with comma placement. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the student shows a reasonable level of control over complex structures, such as conditional sentences and relative clauses.
