Student answer (Band 7.5)

I agree with the argument to an extent that using mobile phone while driving is prone to danger since it can cause the driver to lose focus and may result into an unfortunate accident or event, however that should not be a sole justification to make the cell phone use illegal when driving.

I am in full agreement that using phone while driving has numerous drawbacks and risks to the driver's life. Driving is a privilege. Driving carelessly not only can cause damage to the driver and passengers of the vehicle, but it can also damage others in the surrounding. That is a huge risk and can never be reversed. When a driver uses cell phone while driving, he or she is not only risking their life but also putting their family and loved ones at catastrophic risk of losing them. It is driver's responsibility to drive with responsibility and follow the rules of driving.

However, illegalize the use of cell phone while driving seems like a highly debatable solution to the problem at hand. In today's world of age and technology, mobile phones have become part of our lives. A person cannot imagine his or her life without the use of phone for a single day let alone for hours in some instances. Nowadays, phone features like GPS tracking, map directions and hands-free calling or communication has become part of advanced technology cars. These features make driving much more effective and stress-free in many ways. Thus, it is not a justified argument to make the use of cell phone illegal solely on the basis of risk or carelessness associated with drivers.

In my opinion, state's department of motor vehicle (DMV) should consider putting regulations in-place that hold drivers accountable for their driving habits and restrict the use of cell phones for drivers in possible ways. They should encourage public to drive responsibly, by doing community wide seminar and lectures on this topic of driving responsibly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. You acknowledge the dangers of distracted driving while arguing against a total ban, suggesting alternative regulatory measures instead. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, though the argument could be strengthened by providing more specific examples of how modern technology (like GPS) can be used safely compared to manual phone use. The position is consistent, and the conclusion provides a logical alternative to the prompt's suggestion, which demonstrates a good level of critical thinking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the risks of driving or the role of technology. You use cohesive devices like 'however', 'thus', and 'in my opinion' to link ideas effectively. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your argument, ensuring the reader can follow your line of reasoning without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'catastrophic risk', 'debatable solution', and 'accountable'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'illegalize the use' (should be 'making the use illegal') and 'in today's world of age and technology' (which is slightly redundant). However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when discussing the importance of mobile phones.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are occasional grammatical errors, such as 'result into' (should be 'result in') and 'illegalize the use... seems' (should be 'illegalizing... seems'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could be improved by better use of commas to separate clauses. The majority of your writing is error-free, and the errors present do not cause confusion for the reader. Continued practice with complex sentence structures will help improve your accuracy.
