Student answer (Band 7.0)

The issue of whether using a mobile phone while driving is dangerous has sparked a considerable debate in recent years. I completely agree that accessing mobile devices behind the wheel should be made illegal because it cause distractions which could lead to severe accidents. This essay will explain the reasons for my viewpoint.

To begin with, mobile devices cause mental stress, visual and physical distraction while operating a vehicle. Many people look at their phone screens for text messages or for calls. As a result, this takes away driver's attention from the road, which cause lower the reaction time if emergency occur. For example, recent accident happened in America where truck driver was using his smartphone and failed to pay attention on the road, which cause a family lost their lives due to mishap. In addition, individuals often drink and drive, which is also put life at risk.

Another point of view is that government should impose strict rules and regulations. Authorities should monitor drivers activities by installing several cameras. If caught police take a strict action by giving drivers the tickets. If necessary, impound the car if the driver is under the influence of alcohol. In addition, advanced technology in vehicles are a great accessibility. However, people tend to use incorrectly such as Apple carplay because they ignore the surrounding traffic. For instance, in countries like Canada or UK, casualties have been reduced after introducing heavy fines or penalty points on driving license.

In conclusion, many individuals still use digital devices while operating a car or truck which has a great significance to increase road accidents. As a solution, the authorities should impose heavy penalty fines to reduce the incidents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments are relevant, such as the mention of reaction times and the effectiveness of government regulations. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the paragraph regarding government intervention introduces irrelevant points about drink-driving and advanced vehicle technology, which distract from the core focus on cell phone use. While the position is clear, the supporting examples could be more tightly focused to ensure a more cohesive argument. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as the sudden shift to drink-driving in the second paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within the second and third paragraphs could be improved by ensuring every sentence directly supports the main topic sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'distractions', 'regulations', 'impound', and 'casualties'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'cause lower the reaction time' (should be 'reduce reaction time') and 'give drivers the tickets' (should be 'issue tickets'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The student relies on some repetitive phrasing, but communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it cause distractions', 'which cause lower the reaction time', 'technology... are a great accessibility') and article usage. While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended message. The student attempts complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses.
