Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the recent years, people are using mobile phones even while driving which has arised plethora of traffic problems. Hence, many advocate to make it illegal. And I strongly agree with this statement because there are several reported incidents which deems it as an unsafe driving activity.

The primary reason why I support this opinion is because use of cell phones have led to loosing focus and concentration. There are multiple road accidents which took place only because of the distracted drivers. For instance, a person who drives without the presence of mobile are proven to be better and more focused drivers than the ones who are constantly engaged in their phones as it divides the attention between road and messages.

The second reason is such activity can result in serious damage to body and property, and in worse case scenario it can even result in death. Thus, it is something that should be taken very seriously not only by the government but also by the general public. In a recent report, it has been demonstrated that about 40% of people who have died in a vehicle accidents was because of interruption caused by mobiles.

However, it is understandle that apps in phone such as google map is extremely useful in navigating the direction, one should be mindful for the frequency of their uses. Likewise, what I support is to have minimal use of it but not a complete ban on its usage as it does play a significant role in travelling and directing the person behind the wheels.

Overall, It is evident that engaging in cell phones while driving is extremely detrimental and needs government's interference to mitigate the usages. However, making it completely illegal might not be beneficial in long run as it does help in the navigating a smooth journey.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons for your stance, such as the loss of focus and the potential for serious accidents. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While the first two body paragraphs are well-supported, the third paragraph introduces a counter-argument that slightly contradicts your initial strong agreement with a total ban. This creates a slight tension in your position, as you move from supporting a ban to suggesting only 'minimal use'. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments remain consistent and fully extended without introducing conflicting viewpoints that weaken your central thesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'The second reason', and 'However' to guide the reader through your argument. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the 'government's interference' and the 'long run' benefits could be more smoothly linked. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental', 'mitigate', and 'plethora'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'arised' (should be 'arisen'), 'loosing' (should be 'losing'), and 'understandle' (spelling error). These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary is used accurately in context rather than just attempting to use 'big' words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive feature. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('use of cell phones have led', '40% of people... was') and article usage errors ('in a vehicle accidents'). While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and pluralization rules. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
