Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of distraction and vision impairment, and the example regarding Ontario traffic laws provides specific support. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; the explanation of how phone brightness causes vision loss is a bit simplistic, and the paragraph regarding over-speeding is slightly tangential as it shifts focus away from the primary argument of cell phone use. To reach a higher band, ensure that every paragraph directly reinforces your central argument rather than introducing competing causes for accidents.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To embark on', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', though some of these are used mechanically or are slightly unnatural in an academic context. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors. The logical progression is present, but the transition between the argument for banning phones and the counter-argument about speeding could be smoother to improve the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'accident on roads seen mor' (more accidents are seen) and 'major road crash is lead by this'. The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'demerit points' and 'highway police', which is positive. However, frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'justifrd', 'demeirt', 'tempory', 'constanly', 'immedatily') and awkward phrasing hinder the overall impact and clarity of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences often contain errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'driver loss control', 'use of mobile can created'), article usage, and tense consistency. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of grammatical errors requires the reader to exert effort to interpret the intended message. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
