Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 124 words. This significantly limits the development of ideas. While the student expresses a clear position regarding the dangers of mobile phone use while driving, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack the depth required for a higher band. The response touches on the prompt but does not provide a comprehensive discussion or sufficient supporting evidence to fully address the task. The brevity of the essay prevents a thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a clear logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the ideas within the paragraphs are disjointed and lack effective cohesive devices to link sentences. The transition between the introduction, the personal anecdote, and the concluding thoughts is abrupt. Referencing is often unclear, and the overall structure is mechanical, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of the argument. Improved use of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'however' would help improve the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to convey complex ideas. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'I am disagree' instead of 'I disagree' and 'scotty driver' which is informal and unclear. The range of vocabulary is insufficient for the task, relying on simple, everyday language. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to road safety and traffic regulations, and work on correct word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('it's cause accident'), missing articles, and incorrect sentence structures ('Yes using cell phone is dangerous whole driving car'). The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. There is a lack of complex sentence forms, and punctuation is inconsistent. Frequent errors in basic grammar, such as tense usage and prepositional phrases, are evident throughout the text.
