Student answer (Band 7.0)

Cell phone has become quite essential in everyday life from recent decades. It is often argued by some individuals that operating phone while driving could be distracted to driver. Consequently, these should be made illegal while driving. I totally agree with this notion due to this, it can lead to serious collision. Hence, these should be prohibited when operating vehicle.

Admittedly, there are few reasons behind this trend why phone should not be used when driving. The most prominent is fatal accident. To explicate, using phone such as text message, browsing social media or making call could distract eyes and mind away from the road which can cause of accident. For example, a driver when using phone who not aware, somebody is crossing pedestrian path then he could hit them. Moreover, government can put heavy fines and panelity which can make difference and contribute to reduce accidents. Therefore, using phones should be illegal during driving.

Furthermore, some people consider that they should be allowed to use for free hand devices which would convienient for them. Although these device could keep their hands free , it is still distract their attention form road due to this could be serious problem. Instead of this, authority should allow them to make call only in emergency when it need that make huge difference to reduce accidents. Also this could not only beneficial for drivers but also for other road users such as cyclists and pedestrian.

In conclusion, i completely agree with this statement that using phone become cause of distraction and collision, and strict laws and regulation can encourage driver to safe driving which save many lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The main ideas—safety risks and the need for strict regulation—are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of pedestrians and the potential for government fines. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the discussion on hands-free devices could be expanded to better explain why they are still distracting. Overall, the response is well-focused on the topic, and the conclusion reinforces the writer's stance effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'admittedly', 'moreover', and 'furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas from the dangers of distraction to the role of government and the limitations of hands-free technology is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'prohibited', 'explicate', and 'regulation'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'could be distracted to driver' (should be 'distracting to the driver') and 'panelity' (spelling error for 'penalty'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the range and precision of the language used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'using phone such as text message... could distract eyes' and 'some people consider that they should be allowed to use for free hand devices'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing articles (e.g., 'using phone' instead of 'using a phone') and issues with subject-verb agreement. These errors occur frequently but do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning.
