Student answer (Band 6.5)

I strongly agree that using a cell phone while driving should be made illegal because it distracts drivers and greatly increases the risk of road accidents.Although mobile phones can be useful in emergencies, road safety should always be the highest priority.

The main reason for supporting this view is that using a phone reduces a driver’s attention. Wether a person is texting, making a call or checking notifications, their focus shifts away from the road. Even a fee seconds of distraction can lead to serious accidents, especially in heavy traffic or at high speeds. As a result, both the driver and other road users are placed in danger.

Another important point is that strict laws can help reduce careless driving. If drivers know they may face heavy fines, penalty points, or license suspension, they are more likely to avoid using their phones while driving. Many countries have already introduced such laws, and reports have shown a decrease in accidents relates to distracted driving after these regulations were enforced.

However, some people argue that mobile phones are necessary for navigation or emergency situations. While this is true, modern technology provides safer alternatives. Drivers can use hands-free, voice commands or park their vehicles before making a call sending a message. These options allow people to stay connected without putting lives at risk.

In conclusion, I completely agree that using a cell phone while driving should be illegal because it is a major cause of distraction and road accidents. Strict regulations, together with safer communication methods, can help protect drivers, passengers and pedestrians, making roads safer for everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it consistently throughout the essay. Each paragraph develops a distinct, relevant point—distraction, legal deterrents, and the availability of safer alternatives—which are well-supported with logical reasoning. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more specific real-world example, such as mentioning a particular country's policy or a specific study, to further strengthen the depth of your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The main reason for', 'Another important point', and 'In conclusion'. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. The flow is natural, and the reader is guided through your argument without any confusion. The structure is highly effective and supports the overall clarity of your position.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, such as 'distracted driving', 'license suspension', and 'regulations'. The language is generally precise and natural. There are a few minor slips, such as 'accidents relates to' (should be 'related to') and 'fee seconds' (a typo for 'few'). While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the score toward the higher bands. Overall, the vocabulary is well-suited to the task and conveys your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'Wether' (spelling error for 'Whether') and the missing preposition in 'making a call sending a message' (should be 'or sending'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are accurate, and you show a good command of complex structures, which is consistent with the requirements for a high band score.
