Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 92 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the prompt asks for an opinion on whether cell phone use should be illegal, the response is incomplete and lacks a clear, sustained position. The arguments provided are very brief and lack the necessary extension, examples, or depth required for a task of this nature. Consequently, the response is underdeveloped and does not fully address the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is too short to demonstrate effective paragraphing or a clear logical progression. While there is a basic attempt to use a cohesive device ('To begin with'), the overall structure is fragmented. The ideas are not sufficiently linked to form a coherent argument, and the lack of a conclusion or a fully developed body paragraph makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. The text lacks the necessary cohesive devices to manage the flow of information effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive. Phrases such as 'become a part of our life' and 'make a life easier' are simplistic and lack the precision required for higher band scores. There is no attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary. The word choice is functional but limited, and the repetition of 'cell phones' and 'driving' indicates a restricted range of expression that does not allow for a nuanced discussion of the topic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors that affect clarity. For example, 'It make a life easier' lacks subject-verb agreement, and 'they distract from road' is missing an article. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of basic errors in such a short text indicates a lack of control over grammatical structures, preventing the response from reaching a higher band score.
