Student answer (Band 6.5)
Using cellphones while driving is very common nowadays and it causes distractions to drivers and result in severe accidents. For this reason, some people say that cellphone usage during driving must be made illegal, and I strongly agree to this. One reason is the fatal incidents incidents that we see on our roads regularly, as driver use phones for a longer periods. They are not only causing harm to themselves, but also for others and the public properties. Broader measures must be taken by government against this, and should give the drivers, awareness of safe driving.
Using cellphones while driving is somewhat like a fancy to many people, and they realize its consequences until they end up with some critical incident. Accidents due to the usage of mobile phone while driving has now become a common scenario. Statistically, there has been many who lost their life in road accidents due this, the eyes of the authorities are blind folded, and no actions were taken to mitigate this in many part of the world.
As a result, people have become more ignorant to their as we as others safety and use our roads in the way they wish. Governments should implement stringent rules to tackle this by declaring phone usage illegal when driving, and heavily penalize, and, or jail sentences to people who refuse to follow this. That is, the punishment should be so harsh that people should understand the cost of their and others life before they take their phones when driving. On top of that, drivers must be educated properly by giving proper awareness on good driving practices.
Canada is one of the best example in the whole world, which made the usage of mobiles while driving illegal, they even suspend or terminate license depending on the gravity of incident occurred. No matter who is driving, whether that be a common man, police, government officials, they take strict action against those who don't follow their traffic rules.
To conclude, imposing strict rules, declaring phone usage as an illegal practice while driving, giving penalties for habitual offenders will help the authorities to reduce road accidents due to mobile phones. Proper awareness and educating them regularly will make them a responsible driver.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The argument is supported by relevant examples, such as the mention of Canada's traffic laws. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, the discussion on 'awareness' is somewhat repetitive and lacks specific detail on how such programs would function. The response is well-structured, and the writer clearly expresses their strong agreement with the proposal to make cell phone use illegal while driving. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively, though the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For this reason', 'As a result', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the transition between the second and third paragraphs. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences, like 'Statistically, there has been many who lost their life', suffer from minor grammatical issues that slightly disrupt the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinions clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'stringent', 'mitigate', and 'habitual offenders'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'public properties' instead of 'public property' and 'blind folded' (which should be one word or hyphenated). Additionally, phrases like 'somewhat like a fancy' are slightly unnatural. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, more precise and varied vocabulary would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there has been many who lost their life') and preposition usage (e.g., 'ignorant to their as we as others safety'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some unnecessary commas used in lists or between clauses. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the essay, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication. Greater attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
