Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that using a mobile phone while driving distracts drivers and increase the risk of road accidents. Therefore, some people believe that the use of mobile phone should be prohibited by law. I completely agree with this view because it improves road safety and helps reduce accidents.

The primary reason why I support this opinion is that using a cell phone significantly distracts drivers. Drivers need to pay full attention to the road. However, talking, texting, or checking notifications reduces their concentration and reaction time. For example, a driver who looks at a text message for just a few seconds may fail to notice a pedestrian and another vehicle, which can result in a serious accident. Therefore, banning mobile phone use while driving can save many lives.

Another reason is that strict laws encourage people to follow rules and regulations while driving. When drivers know that they may receive heavy fines or loss their driving license, they are less likely to use their phones during driving. For example, in many countries where strict penalties have been introduced, the number of road accidents caused by distracted driving has decreased. Consequently, strict rules regarding distracted driving creates safer roads for everyone.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that drivers should not be allowed to use mobile phones while driving because it reduces distractions and promotes road safety. Government should enforce strict laws to protect both drivers and pedestrians. Thus, banning cellphones during driving is not only save people's lives but also enhance safety roads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the point regarding the impact of strict laws on driver behavior. Each paragraph provides a clear reason supported by logical explanations and examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance and provides a final thought. To reach a higher band, you could aim to provide more nuanced development of your ideas, perhaps by acknowledging potential counter-arguments or exploring the societal implications of such a ban in greater depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', 'For example', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for instance, in the final sentence, 'banning cellphones during driving is not only save people's lives' is slightly awkward. Overall, the flow of information is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'prohibited by law', 'reaction time', and 'strict penalties' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'loss their driving license' (should be 'lose') and 'enhance safety roads' (should be 'enhance road safety'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the highest band. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would further enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over grammar, and the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'increase the risk' (should be 'increases') and 'strict rules... creates' (should be 'create'). Additionally, the final sentence contains a structural error: 'is not only save people's lives but also enhance' should be 'not only saves people's lives but also enhances'. Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally strong and does not hinder the reader's understanding.
