Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, excessive reliance on technical gadgets have completely transformed the way of living. Cell phones usage while driving is highly dangerous as it hinders the focus of driver and distracts the driving pattern. Thus, some believe that drivers should not use cell phones while driving and it should be prohibited by law. I strongly agree with this view, as this shift has several drawbacks which are the main reasons to increase the road accidents .

First compelling factor is that mobile usage should be totally avoided during driving because it disrupts the focus of driver and leading to unavoidable collisions. It not only creates issues for driver himself, but it also increases the risk for other drivers on road. For instance, a recent survey showed that many serious collisions such as fatal incidents are commonly happens due to the distraction made by cellphones. Therefore, the government should implement some stricter regulations and fines to overcome this challenge.

Another significant factor is that it promotes reckless driving behavior. Many drivers, especially youngsters who are vulnerable, they often take bad decision while driving such as capturing videos, pictures and coming live on social media. Which eventually raise the risk and chances of unexpected accidents due to their childish and vulnerable behavior. I believe government should impose stricter policies and there should be huge penalties together with driving demerit points for reckless drivers to curb this challenge effectively and efficiently.

In conclusion, due to the distraction of mobile phones while driving, number of collisions are elevating at an alarming rate. Despite implementing strict regulations, the government should also introduce a huge amount of penalties for risk taking drivers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on safety risks and reckless behavior. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the points about 'distraction' and 'accidents' are mentioned in both body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be more distinct, perhaps by discussing the psychological aspect of addiction to devices versus the physical impairment of driving. The conclusion is a bit brief and merely restates the points rather than synthesising them. Overall, the response is well-focused but could benefit from deeper exploration of the consequences beyond just 'accidents'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'First compelling factor', 'Another significant factor', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. There are also minor issues with referencing; for example, in the second paragraph, the sentence starting with 'Which eventually raise...' is a fragment that lacks a clear subject, which disrupts the flow. The use of pronouns is generally clear, but the overall progression could be smoother if the sentences were more varied in their structure and connection.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'unavoidable collisions', 'vulnerable', and 'curb this challenge'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'distracts the driving pattern' (which is unnatural) and 'many serious collisions... are commonly happens' (grammatical error affecting lexical precision). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher band. More precise collocations related to road safety would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'excessive reliance... have' (should be 'has') and 'incidents are commonly happens' (should be 'happen'). There are also issues with article usage and sentence fragments, such as 'Which eventually raise the risk'. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the control over them is not consistent. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score in this criterion.
