Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed that using mobile phone while driving is hazardous because it causes the driver to become distracted when they use it. Hence, the use of cell phones by drivers should be banned. I partially agree with the statement due to some reasons which will be explained in the paragraphs.

On the one hand, these are numerous reasons why this is dangerous while driving. First and foremost, if a person uses cell phones continuously while driving, there is the high chances that they could meet with an accident; for example, every day thousands of accident cases are registered only because of using mobile phones by drivers. As a result, several individuals loss their lives due to the careless behaviour of drivers. Moreover, using cell phones by drivers becomes the main reason of reaching late to destinations because when drivers use mobile phones on their working time, their whole concentration is at phone which leads to slow driving. Therefore, people get late for their work, school or college.

On the other hand, it should not be made illegal because it has several merits. Firstly, sometimes when a driver is new and they do not have any idea about the routes or roads of a new place that time cell phones become substantially beneficial because nowadays GPS and other applications are available to track location easily. Additionally, sometimes mobile phones are really imperative to contact with others in emergency situations such as accidents, health problem, technical issues and so on. Therefore, that time if a driver has a cell phone, they can easily contact to get help.

To recapitulate, no doubt using mobile phone while driving is dangerous due to various reasons such as accidents, reaching late and many more; however, despite of having countless demerits, it has some advantages like finding locations by using navigation and getting assists by making calls in emergency situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by providing a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. Your stance is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'reaching late' due to mobile phone use is a bit weak and lacks a logical connection to the primary issue of safety. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are more robust and directly address the core of the prompt. The conclusion effectively summarizes your position, but it could be more impactful by reinforcing the main argument rather than just listing the points mentioned earlier.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to transition between ideas. However, some of these devices feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother; for example, the transition between the dangers of driving and the issue of punctuality is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus will help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'hazardous', 'imperative', and 'substantially'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'loss their lives' (should be 'lose') and 'contact to get help' (should be 'contact someone for help'). You also tend to repeat certain phrases like 'using mobile phones by drivers'. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms and pay closer attention to word forms and collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more topic-specific collocations related to road safety would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'there is the high chances' (should be 'there are high chances'), 'on their working time' (should be 'while working'), and 'despite of' (should be 'despite'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of prepositions. Proofreading your work for these common errors will help you achieve greater accuracy.
