Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, there has been an ongoing debate that usage of cellphones should be banned while driving because it is very dangerous and it causes the driver to become distracted. I largely agree with this view because using phone while driving not all only harmful for drivers but also leads to many road accidents.

One of the main reasons for banning cellphone while driving because constant notification from smartphones make driver distracted from road signs and traffic lights. This distraction put others life in danger and cause severe accidents on road. It also creates many problems to the driver such as penalty fines and jail sentence. For example, in recent survey there was a report that about seventy percent of road accidents are caused by driver's negligibility towards traffic rules. Therefore, many innocent people are losing their life due to other's carelessness.

If the government make using cellphone while driving illegal it would provide so many benefits to the society. Firstly, individuals must follow the traffic rules without any distraction which leads to less accidents on road. Secondly, they make themselves more responsible towards others safety and precautions. For instance, in Canada there is a strict rule that if anyone get caught by police using cellphone while driving they get a large amount of ticket and get demerits points on their licesense. As a result, citizens are less likely to use the phone and concentrated on driving.

In conclusion, I believe it is very significant to make some strict regulations on drivers using cellphone. This encourage more responsibility and awareness in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of distractions and the benefits of strict regulations. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'penalty fines and jail sentence' is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of its effectiveness as a deterrent. The example provided about Canada is relevant and supports the argument well. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your supporting points with more depth and nuance, ensuring that every claim is fully explained rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. For example, the transition between the problem of distraction and the consequence of fines could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a band 6.5 or 7.0 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'negligibility' (though this is a misuse of the word; 'negligence' would be correct) and 'regulations'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'make themselves more responsible towards others safety' and 'get a large amount of ticket'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring accurate word forms will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the road', 'a survey'), subject-verb agreement ('government make', 'this encourage'), and pluralization ('others life', 'many road accidents'). Some sentences are also slightly awkward, such as 'usage of cellphones should be banned'. While you demonstrate an attempt at complex structures, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, especially regarding articles and verb endings, would significantly improve the quality of your writing.
