Student answer (Band 6.5)

Distracted driving is one of the major causes of accidents these days, using a mobile phone while driving is one of the main causes of distractions while driving. Many believe using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, and I strongly agree. Therefore, a strict action should be taken against the drivers who are proven guilty.

Firstly, when a driver is on road their focus should totally be on the route. Continuous analysis of the road and potential dangers should be performed by the driver. Operating any kind of device should be prohibited as it deviate the drivers concentration. Authorities should enforce rules against these activities and should heavily penalize the drivers who are found guilty. These actions should be strict and well planned which will result in better safety on road. For instance, if a driver is caught using a mobile phone while driving they should get demerit points on their drivers license and should be restricted from driving for few days or months.

Secondly, distracted driving is considered to be as dangerous as drunk driving because in both these cases, because drivers cannot totally focus on the road and can potentially cause accidents. Use of a mobile device while operating a motor vehicle should be equally punishable as drunk driving. These strict actions will increase the awareness amongst people and it can decrease the risks on road to some extent.

In conclusion, there should be legal consequences against the people who use cell phones while being on road as it will improve road safety and save lives. Offenders should be penalized and restricted from driving for a certain amount of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of making cell phone use while driving illegal. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the comparison to drunk driving. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the conclusion restates the points made in the body paragraphs without adding new depth. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your arguments with more specific real-world examples or nuanced consequences beyond just 'penalties' and 'safety'. The position is consistent throughout, and the main ideas are well-supported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'these actions' in the second paragraph, which could be more precisely linked to the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay flows well from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'continuous analysis', 'heavily penalize', and 'legal consequences' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'it deviate the drivers concentration' (should be 'deviates') and 'being on road' (should be 'on the road'). The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, but there is limited use of less common or idiomatic language that would be required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and articles, such as 'when a driver is on road' (missing 'the') and 'it deviate' (should be 'deviates'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are slightly run-on. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from reaching the 7.0 band, which requires more frequent error-free sentences and better control of complex structures.
