Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is currently a contentious argument over the government made illegal to use a cell phone while driving a vehicle. I totally agree with this opinion because drivers will be terrified by police officers and enhance their concentration on the road.

The first and foremost reason why I agree with this idea is that people will be frightened by defence officers. This is because they are already aware of traffic rules, which carry a penalty of up to 2 years' prison if they use a mobile phone while driving. For example, nowadays drivers do not run a red light because of a 3000 rupee fine in India. Therefore, other citizens will feel safe while walking on footpaths and enjoy their activities.

Another important reason is that it enhances the concentration of drivers. In other words, when drivers are not distracted and avoid using smartphones, they instead use electronic devices and talk to their family members, which strengthens their bond. For instance, in 2007, news went viral that 60% of road accidents happen because of using cell phones. As a result, people can also save their money by not spending on unnecessary repairs of cars or vehicles.

However, some people are used to listening to music and taking important calls while going to the office. This is because they are always busy with work at home, which does not allow them to take vital calls before going to the office. Hence, it will affect their performance at the workplace.

Having analyzed the various aspects of the issue in question, it is concluded that avoiding phones while driving has marvellous impacts on drivers' concentration and the real power of police departments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While the first body paragraph provides a clear argument regarding deterrence, the second paragraph contains a logical contradiction: you argue that avoiding phones enhances concentration, but then suggest that drivers should talk to family members instead, which is also a distraction. Furthermore, the counter-argument in the third paragraph is slightly underdeveloped and does not fully address how the safety risks could be mitigated. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your main thesis without introducing conflicting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'The first and foremost reason,' 'Another important reason,' and 'However' to link your points. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final sentence where 'the real power of police departments' does not logically follow from the previous discussion about driver concentration. The use of cohesive devices is sufficient, but the flow between sentences could be more natural to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'contentious argument' and 'distracted,' but there are instances of awkward word choice, such as 'defence officers' (likely meaning traffic police) and 'marvellous impacts.' The phrase 'news went viral' is slightly informal for an academic essay. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary that fits the context of road safety and legislation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'government made illegal to use' (should be 'government should make it illegal to use') and 'spending on unnecessary repairs of cars or vehicles.' While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors in sentence construction and verb forms prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
