Student answer (Band 8.0)
People have different views on whether using mobile phones while driving can be justified. While some people believe that using a phone is necessary in urgent situations, others argue that it can pose a serious risk to road safety. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that using a mobile phone while driving is extremely dangerous.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why many individuals consider using a mobile phone while driving acceptable. Firstly, in situations where drivers need to reach a destination urgently, they may keep their phones active to monitor their journey or track their status. For example, ambulance drivers and delivery workers may need to keep navigation or tracking applications running in the background to provide their exact location or update the status of a delivery. Furthermore, there are occupations such as Uber driving, carpooling and food delivery in which workers may need to use their phones for work-related purposes.
On the other hand, others argue that using a mobile phone while driving should be considered illegal for safety reasons. One major concern is that diverting attention to a phone or any other distraction can significantly increase the likelihood of an accident. Additionally, driving requires constant concentration, particularly when changing lanes, checking other vehicles in the rearview mirrors, and maintaining a safe distance from surrounding traffic. For instance, many people have found themselves in dangerous situations after texting or talking on the phone while driving, as even a momentary lapse in concentration can have serious consequences.
In conclusion, both views have their own merits. However, I firmly believe that using mobile phones while driving should be considered unlawful because it poses a significant risk to road safety. In urgent situations, smartphones can be connected to the vehicle’s hands-free system, allowing drivers to access essential functions without taking their attention away from the road. Therefore, using a phone directly while driving should be avoided to prevent potentially life-threatening consequences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between professional use and general distraction. You provide relevant examples, such as ambulance drivers and delivery workers, to support the opposing view, and then effectively counter this by suggesting hands-free systems as a compromise. The conclusion reinforces your stance well. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-argument does not overshadow your own position; while you discuss both sides, your personal stance is clearly the focus, which is appropriate for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the opposing view and your own argument is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the referencing is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases like 'pose a serious risk', 'momentary lapse in concentration', and 'life-threatening consequences' show a level of precision and natural collocation. You successfully avoid repetition and use topic-specific terminology correctly. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. Overall, the language is natural and contributes to a clear, professional tone that is well-suited to the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as in the sentence 'While some people believe that using a phone is necessary in urgent situations, others argue that it can pose a serious risk to road safety.' The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication or cause any confusion for the reader.
