Student answer (Band 6.5)

The usage of cellphone while driving is an extremely dangerous activity. While I acknowledge the severity of the matter, I also see the neccesity of the usage. I parially agree with the statement and will provide my views in the essay.

Using a cell phone while driving in any form of way like texting, on a call with someone etc is an highly risky activity. As it can distract the driver, which not only is deadly for himself but for other people on the road too. Moreover, the Transport Union of America published a data which stated that 65 percent of the road accidents were the result of driving while using a cell phone. Furthermore, a close friend of mine was also a victim of the same situation, a driver rear ended him at an intersection, he didn't paid attention to the red lights and hit my friend's car at a very high speed. He suffered some major injuries but was able to recover. When on road, we not only have to care about our safety but the safety of others too. If a driver is found texting or making a call while driving, he should be punished accordingly.

On the other hand, food delivery drivers rely solely on the cellphones for their work. If they get any orders while they are driving, they have to use the phone to accept the order. If using a cellphone entirely is made illegal, it would have serious affect on the earning of these drivers.

In conclusion, i support the idea of making the usage of cell phone while driving illegal but it should be done so while taking the food delivery drivers in account too. They provide essntial services, making it fully illegal with the exception of onlu using it too accept the food orders is a good balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position that balances the dangers of driving while using cell phones with the practical needs of specific workers like delivery drivers. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning statistics from the Transport Union of America and sharing a personal anecdote involving a close friend. However, some arguments like the mention of delivery drivers could be further developed with deeper analysis regarding potential hands-free solutions or policy exceptions. Overall, the response meets the criteria for Band 7, as it addresses all parts with a clear, supported position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a clear overall logical organization and progression throughout the essay. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, the main argument against cell phones, the counter-argument regarding delivery drivers, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, utilizing words like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. For instance, the transition into the conclusion contains minor awkwardness. Nevertheless, the logical flow is easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'severity of the matter', 'distract the driver', and 'essential services'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items, though some spelling and word-choice errors occur, such as 'neccesity' instead of 'necessity', 'parially' instead of 'partially', and 'an highly risky' instead of 'a highly risky'. Additionally, phrases like 'published a data' (should be 'published data') reflect minor inaccuracies. Communication is never impeded by these lexical slips, which firmly places the response in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating adequate structural variety with sentences like 'While I acknowledge the severity of the matter, I also see the neccesity of the usage.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as fragment sentences ('As it can distract the driver...'), agreement issues ('a driver rear ended him... he didn't paid attention' instead of 'did not pay'), and lowercase starting letters for pronouns like 'i support'. Despite these frequent errors, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning clearly. This corresponds to a Band 6 performance.
