Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether cell phone use while driving should be made illegal. The writer agrees to some extent, acknowledging the dangers of distraction while also highlighting practical benefits such as navigation and traffic updates. Ideas are generally relevant, but some points are somewhat underdeveloped or repetitive, such as the discussion on bluetooth connectivity and navigation. The personal anecdote provided in the third body paragraph helps to support the argument, although the overall development is slightly limited by shallow elaboration in places. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay, aligning well with the requirements for Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt, such as dangers, counter-arguments, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used throughout the text, including transition markers like 'Hence', 'Although', and 'Despite of having a threat'. However, some cohesive devices are used inaccurately or mechanically, such as 'Despite of having a threat'. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with ambiguous pronoun usage ('oneself', 'its passanger'). Paragraphing is sufficient, but the logical flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to reach higher band levels.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common lexical items such as 'meticulous', 'confrontation', and 'negligence'. However, there are frequent spelling errors ('dristract', 'automatice', 'sea' instead of see, 'conforntation', 'threatning', 'passanger', 'reponsible', 'abort' instead of aboard, 'drivera', 'nevigate', 'entertainments', 'dengerous') and word choice inaccuracies ('meticulous activity' instead of activity requiring meticulousness, 'extend' instead of extent). These errors occasionally cause slight confusion for the reader, though communication is not severely impeded. The lexical range is sufficient for a Band 5.5 to 6.0, but spelling instability prevents a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional or concessive clauses such as 'Although many automatice vehicle have now been introduce in the market...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors appearing across basic and complex structures. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Driver needs', 'Driver is reponsible', 'driver needs use'), missing articles ('use of cell phone', 'on a road trip'), incorrect prepositions, and structural errors like 'Despite of having a threat'. Punctuation is also erratic in places, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited level of grammatical control.
