Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response clearly states a position in agreement with the prompt, arguing that mobile phone usage while driving should be made illegal due to distractions. However, the response falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum requirement, containing only 206 words. This negative constraint directly impacts task achievement, as the ideas are limited and under-developed due to the lack of sufficient length. While the student mentions penalties like fines and FIR, and suggests pulling over in emergencies, the development of these points remains rudimentary. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a Band 5.0 score for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some organisation with basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'To sum up', and 'In my opinion'. However, the paragraphing is extremely weak, with almost the entire essay clumped into a single massive block of text, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and the logical flow between sentences is somewhat disjointed due to repetitive phrasing and abrupt shifts in thought. While there is an overall attempt to structure an argument, the poor paragraphing and mechanical use of cohesive devices place this criterion at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'distracted', 'carelessness', 'addictive', and 'emergency'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'a very careful act' (where the writer likely meant a dangerous or careless act), 'negleigency' (misspelling of negligence), and 'diminish' instead of 'diminished'. Word formation and spelling errors occur frequently enough to cause occasional difficulty for the reader, which aligns with the descriptors for Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex ones. There are numerous punctuation and grammatical errors throughout the text, including comma splices and misuse of articles (e.g., 'It take almost one minute', 'So their should be strict rules', 'driver,s negleigency will be diminish'). Frequent errors in basic sentence construction and verb forms cause strain for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band, making Band 4.5 appropriate.
