Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, people are getting more attached to their mobile phones. Due to this they also use them while driving which is scary as driver can get distracted this can cause serious problem. To tackle the situation cell phone use should be made illegal while driving. I completely agree with the given statement and serious steps need to be taken by government and traffic control system.

First and foremost reason is that if the cell phone use should be made illegal while using vehicles there will be decrease in the number of accidents on road. This will save the life of half population. As the accident rates is increasing day by day mobile phone is one of the main reason. For example - if person will not allowed to use the phone while driving than he/she can easily focus on the road which will increase their concentration while driving and reduces the accidents automatically.

Secondly, government or traffic control system, should make laws like issuing the tickets to the driver if they see them using their phones while driving. This will make people afraid as they do not want to pay for the tickets which makes them to follow rules and regulations. Moreover, advertisement can also help in which high authorities can convey the message regarding illegal use of phones when they are using

vehicles. The person who do not follow the rules have to pay fine or their driver licensed can also get cancelled. This will help to reduce the mobile usage while driving.

To conclude, I completely agree with the statement that cell phones should not be allowed when using a vehicle as they can distract the driver. To decrease the use of phones it should be considered illegal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a complete agreement with the prompt that cell phone use while driving should be made illegal. The writer presents relevant main ideas, such as reducing accidents on roads and implementing stricter government laws like fines or license cancellations. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive and under-developed, such as the claim that it will save the life of half the population, which lacks nuance. The position is maintained clearly throughout the introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. While the arguments are generally straightforward and cover the main requirements of a General Training Task 2, further expansion with more specific real-world examples would elevate the content. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fulfilling the descriptor for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and distinct paragraphing, moving from an introduction to two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Transitional markers such as 'First and foremost reason', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' are used to sequence ideas, although some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as 'when they are using vehicles' at the end of paragraph three. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional ambiguous pronouns like 'he/she' and 'this' blur connections between clauses. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct arguments about safety and legislation. This level of organisation aligns with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items and subject-specific terminology such as 'concentration', 'regulations', 'advertisement', and 'authorities'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'half population' instead of 'half the population', 'driving licensed' instead of 'driver's license', and phrasing like 'issuing the tickets to the driver'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor lexical infelicities occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 7. The range is minimally sufficient to convey the writer's meaning without causing major impedance to communication, fitting Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting subordinate clauses and conditionals, such as 'if person will not allowed to use the phone while driving than he/she can easily focus'. However, control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, including tense and modal verb inaccuracies ('if the cell phone use should be made illegal', 'The person who do not follow'), missing articles, and awkward punctuation choices like unnecessary hyphens and commas. Despite these errors, the meaning remains comprehensible, and communication is rarely impeded. These characteristics place the response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
