Student answer (Band 5.0)

Thousands of accidents happen on the roads due to mobile phone use while driving. Some people think that the use of mobile phones while driving should be illegal because of various hazardous reasons. I totally agree with this and will explain the same in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, the first reason, millions and billions of people have lost their lives because of these accidents. The main reason behind them is the use of mobile phones. Mobile distracts the human mind, and people are not able to focus on driving. Consequently, they hit another vehicle, and sometime only small mistake creates a big obstacle for others. People who do not have any fault suffer a big loss regarding their health.

Furthermore, banning on using mobile phone encourages individuals to develop safer driving habits. If people know they can receive a fine or other penalty

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The student addresses the task by stating a clear position of total agreement with banning mobile phone use while driving. However, the response is severely limited by its length, containing only 145 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words. Because the text breaks off mid-sentence and is under-length, the ideas are inadequately developed, and the second body paragraph remains incomplete. For these reasons, the response can only be evaluated at a Band 4.5 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is divided into logical paragraphs and attempts to sequence ideas using basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is mechanically handled and referencing is sometimes imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'explain the same'. More importantly, the abrupt ending of the text prevents any effective overall progression or conclusion. Paragraphing is initiated properly, but the incomplete second body paragraph hinders the structural integrity, resulting in a Band 5.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for basic communication, utilizing words like 'hazardous', 'distracts', and 'obstacle'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and unnatural phrasing, such as 'millions and billions of people have lost their lives' (which is hyperbolic and inaccurate regarding road accidents) and 'banning on using mobile phone'. Repetition of the phrase 'mobile phones' is also noticeable. These limitations place the lexical resource within the Band 5.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Some people think that the use of mobile phones while driving should be illegal because of various hazardous reasons.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions, including 'sometime only small mistake creates a big obstacle' and 'banning on using mobile phone'. Furthermore, the response trails off incompletely at the end ('If people know they can receive a fine or other penalty'). Errors occasionally cause slight strain, but basic structures are controlled, leading to a Band 5.0 score.
