Student answer (Band 6.0)

Use of a cell phone while driving can be harmful because it can divert the driver's attention from driving, and as a result, it can be cause of serious road accidents. Therefore, the use of phones by drivers should be banned. I totally agree with this point of view because it is a serious hazard to the life of travellers.

No doubt cell phones have now become a necessity of the time, but in certain conditions their usage can risk lives, and driving any vehicle is one of them.

Furthermore, a driver can put many lives in danger if he answers the call while driving a car, for example, i have witnessed an accident which was a occured due to the same reason, a bus driver was talking to someone on the phone, and his bus had crossed the speed limit and he lost his control and as a result, the bus crashed into a car and an ambulance, this ignorance has become the cause of many deaths, and many of them got injuries.

So the conclusion of all the debate is that, authorities can save many lives by making this activity illegal and charging heavy fines from those who violate the rules. Awareness campaigns through social media can also make a larger impact on changing public opinion about safety protocols

of driving, as many youngsters are mostly influenced by the use of social media. And when the young generation of any nation starts changing, this impact will last longer and change overall society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly, taking a clear and well-supported position in total agreement with banning cell phone use while driving. The writer introduces relevant reasons, such as the hazard to travellers and the prevention of tragic accidents. A personal example involving a bus crash is included to support the argument, alongside a concluding discussion on the impact of social media awareness campaigns. While the ideas are relevant and adequately extended, the development of the arguments leans slightly toward generalisation, and the explanation in the personal example is somewhat conversational. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are addressed, and the position is clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas, moving from the initial statement of agreement to a supporting example and concluding with policy suggestions and social media impacts. Paragraphing is used, though the main body section is quite long and could have been broken down further. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Furthermore,' 'as a result,' and 'So the conclusion,' although referencing and transitional links occasionally feel slightly mechanical or run-on, particularly in complex sentences like the long middle sentence starting with 'furthermore, a driver...'. Overall, the structure is clear and follows the requirements for a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'necessity of the time,' 'ignorance,' 'violate the rules,' and 'awareness campaigns.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'cause of serious road accidents' missing an article ('a cause'), 'was a occured' (lexical redundancy/error), and 'many of them got injuries' rather than sustained injuries. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily, which fits the Band 6 profile for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. However, control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is inconsistent, leading to run-on sentences, such as the lengthy third sentence in the second paragraph connected by comma splices ('...a bus driver was talking to someone on the phone, and his bus had crossed... and he lost his control and as a result, the bus crashed...'). Other minor grammatical slips occur, such as the uncapitalised pronoun 'i' and the tense/voice error 'was a occured'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and communication is rarely impeded, placing the grammar firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.
