Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the contramentry era, mobile phone usage has become very important in our daily life. While it is firmly believed that use of cell phone by drivers should be banned, it results in distraction while driving. Although its usage is very dangerous while driving, it also have many pitfals which reduce its negative impacts, so I am partially agree with this statement.

To commence with, its usage by drivers can facilitate them through many detrimantal conditions. Drivers can use it for navigation purpose, if they do not know the way of their destination. For example, many drivers use gogle map, and they reach to their destination without any concern. Another significant factor, is that they can also use it in unfamilar cities. Consequently, it helps the driver through thick and thin.

On the other hand, it also results many problems. When they are using it they lose their consertration on driving, it can lead to an accident on the road. Although it have many positive drawbacks, its usage is very harmful while driving. Nevertheless, if it use in a better way it can assits them in many coditions. For instance, mobile while driving can be use for navigation through mobile apps. Therefor, it can also facilitates them. So I am partially agree.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt only partially, and the position is somewhat confused by contradictory statements, as seen when the writer claims there are 'pitfals which reduce its negative impacts' while simultaneously discussing hazards. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls significantly short of the two-hundred-and-fifty-word minimum. Ideas are limited and under-developed; for instance, the notion that mobile phones help drivers 'through thick and thin' is vague and lacks sufficient supporting details or concrete personal examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to clearly state and maintain a consistent position throughout, expand fully on all parts of the task with well-developed supporting arguments, and ensure the word count requirement is met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation, with the essay divided into an introduction and body paragraphs using simple transition markers such as 'To commence with' and 'On the other hand'. However, there is no clear overall progression of ideas, and the same points regarding navigation and apps are repetitively brought up across different paragraphs. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure within paragraphs lacks logical linkage. To improve in this criterion, the writer must ensure each paragraph introduces distinct, non-repetitive points and uses a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'contramentry' instead of contemporary, 'pitfals', 'detrimantal', 'gogle map', and 'unfamilar'. These errors, alongside awkward collocations like 'positive drawbacks', reflect a restricted lexical control and can cause some difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common terms, but frequent inaccuracies prevent a higher score. To progress further, the writer should focus on expanding their vocabulary range, learning correct word forms and standard collocations, and paying closer attention to spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex clauses. Frequent errors are present in verb forms, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'use of cell phone' missing a determiner, 'it have many pitfals', 'if it use in a better way', and 'so I am partially agree' instead of agreeing. Punctuation errors, such as comma splices ('When they are using it they lose their consertration'), also occur. These persistent errors demand extra effort from the reader to decode the meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase the variety of error-free complex sentence structures and improve basic grammar and punctuation control.
