Student answer (Band 6.0)

Mobile phones have become a necessity of life today. Every individual has become habitual of using it every time, even while driving. Although the use of electronic gadgets on the road is injurious and harmful, people do not have patience anymore. Therefore, it is believed that cell phones should be banned while driving or considered illegal. I agree with this statement for the following reasons.

Firstly, the use of cell phones should be banned while driving because it distracts the driver's mind. To explain, drivers cannot pay full attention to the road due to the distraction of the phone. Driving on the road requires one's concentration, so it should be illegal. For example, using a phone causes health problems and hearing problems because the individual has to face significant consequences, and it also causes financial losses.

Furthermore, the safety of pedestrians should not be neglected, as it paves the way for accidents, injuries and death. To elaborate, a single mistake of driver can cause life threatning of others. For example, if a driver does not take care while driving a vehicle on the road, they can hit pedestrians or other vehicles; hence, it create sense on road, leads to traffic congestion and heavy fines, and some people even have to face social status issues as they get a bad image in society.

To conclude, I support the view of making it illegal, and the government should impose specific rules and regulations to control this, so that everyone can feel comfortable and safe without the risk of accidents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating an opinion on whether mobile phone use while driving should be made illegal. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are under-developed or less fully supported. For example, in the second body paragraph, the writer mentions that using a phone causes 'health problems and hearing problems' and financial losses, which are not directly explained in relation to driving distractions. Similarly, the third paragraph introduces several distinct consequences—such as pedestrians at risk, traffic congestion, heavy fines, and social status issues—without fully extending or clarifying how they all logically connect to the main argument. To reach a higher level, each supporting point should be thoroughly explained and directly linked to the central thesis rather than listing multiple unrelated effects.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the text, such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and progression are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second body paragraph relies on somewhat repetitive phrasing, and the logical progression within the third paragraph is weakened by abruptly linking pedestrian safety to traffic congestion and social status issues. The response fully meets the lower band requirements by providing a recognizable structure and clear paragraph breaks, while showing elements of the next band through its attempt at clear logical sequencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their general meaning. The response attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'injurious', 'pedestrians', and 'traffic congestion'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form that reflect a restricted lexical range. Examples include 'habitual of using it' instead of accustomed to using them, and the phrase 'life threatning of others' instead of life-threatening situations for others. Additionally, terms like 'create sense on road' and 'bad image in society' lack precision and stylistic appropriateness. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the precision of the argument and prevent the text from achieving a higher rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional clauses ('if a driver does not take care') and concessive clauses ('Although the use of electronic gadgets...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including article usage and preposition patterns, such as 'a single mistake of driver' instead of a driver's single mistake, and 'banned while driving or considered illegal'. Despite these inaccuracies, the majority of sentences are understandable, and the errors rarely impede communication. The control over sentence boundaries and punctuation is generally sufficient to maintain clarity, aligning well with a balanced performance at this level.
