Student answer (Band 6.0)

The topic on which I am require to opine has already generated a great debate in terms of road safety measures. We often see a lot of people around us using their mobilephones while driving. Obviously, not only that it is dangerous but in addition to that, it also transpires the civic sense of such nonsenseical individuals. However, in my view, declaring USE OF mobilephones illegal, while driving, is not the only solution. Following are my reasons;

It is in common knowledge that majority of accidents occuring these days are due to drivers using their mobilephones while driving. It distract the attention and consequently result in accidents. But the stats also provides us with another stark reality which is massively contributing in increase of accident ratio is that a large majority of drivers are being seen doing all sort of other activities on mobilephones such as video calling, texting or watching videos. Again such activities distarct the attention of the drivers that results in deadly accidnets.

On the other hand, it is quite understandable these days that keeping mobilephones all the time has become essential if not necessary. Many people do need to have mobilephones with them in case of aany emergencey. For the drivers, it is quite possible that the only mean to communicate with the driver by the company to inform about the sudden change in route is mobile phone. So sometimes it is in fitness of things to carry mobilephones.

So what do we need to do? In my opinion, I think the first and the foremost way is to educate not only the drivers but the masses about the dangers arising out of use of mobilephones while driving. Imposition of hefty fines and suspension of driving permit or seziure of vehicle is another way to discourage use of mobilephones while driving. Government authorities can also setup cameras on major highways so as to apprehend drivers using mobilephones and to award them with examplary punishment.

For the above reasons, in my opinion, combination of bothi.e., educating drivers and strict policies can effectively decrease the ratio of road accidents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you do not support making all cell-phone use while driving illegal, and you propose education and enforcement instead. You address the danger of distraction, acknowledge that phones can be needed for communication, and give practical measures such as fines, licence suspension and cameras. These relevant points cover the task, but some are less fully developed than others. For example, the claim that phones may be needed to receive route changes from a company is not explained or balanced against safer alternatives, and the discussion of other phone activities largely repeats the distraction point. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely what restrictions you support—for instance, banning handheld use while allowing emergency calls—and develop each reason with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: it introduces your view, presents reasons, considers the need to carry phones, and ends with proposed measures and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “For the above reasons” make the main stages visible. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise. “Following are my reasons” and “So what do we need to do?” create a formulaic sequence, while “Again” does not clearly show how the next point relates to the previous one. The final paragraph also repeats the proposed combination without adding much synthesis. Use fewer stock transitions and connect each paragraph’s main claim explicitly to your position; clarify references such as “such activities” and “the only mean” so the links are easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related and formal vocabulary, including “road safety measures,” “distract,” “hefty fines,” and “suspension of driving permit.” This gives you enough language to communicate the main argument, and some less common expressions show ambition. However, several choices are inaccurate, unnatural, or misspelled, which makes the wording less controlled: “transpires the civic sense” does not express the intended idea, “nonsenseical” is not an appropriate word, and “in fitness of things” is awkward in this context. There are also repeated forms such as “mobilephones” and “accidents,” alongside errors such as “distarct” and “accidnets.” Aim for precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling; simpler accurate phrasing will be more effective than formal-sounding expressions used incorrectly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “It distract the attention and consequently result in accidents” and a conditional idea beginning “For the drivers, it is quite possible that…”. This shows an attempt to vary sentence structure, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, some grammatical errors remain across the response. For example, “I am require to opine” has an incorrect verb form, “It distract… and consequently result…” has subject–verb agreement problems, and “majority of accidents… are” needs a more accurate article and agreement pattern. The long sentence beginning “For the drivers” is also difficult to control. Review verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and simplify complex sentences when needed so that more sentences are accurate while retaining variety.
