Student answer (Band 7.0)

Higher education is the basic need for youngsters to be successful in their life. It is generally argued by some individuals that university education should be free and the government should pay its expenses. Although this trend can increase financial burden on the authorities, I believe that it is essential to provide equal opportunity to all students.

One of the most prominent reasons is that the free of cost university education can encourage students to get admission for the higher education. If there is no fee in the universities, parents and youngsters are motivated to get benefit of this facility for better career. It is noticed in Canada that the majority of students do not go to universities because of their financial problem. By enacting free university education rule, thousands of students can be enrolled for higher studies. For example, government universities in India are attracting the attention of students to take admissions there.

Another persuasive argument reinforcing my viewpoint is that all people get equal opportunity for higher education despite their social status . There are middle class families in the society who cannot afford universities fee; therefore, they have to remain without university studies. When the governments pay the costs of universities, all students get chance to get higher education and grow in their life without encountering financial challenges.

In conclusion, while enduring expenses of universities for the authorities might be difficult, and they may have to incline taxes on people, it may create better opportunities for the young generation of the countries that impose this rule.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the task and maintained a clear position throughout the essay. Your ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Canada and India. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the implications of your arguments more deeply. For instance, instead of just stating that free education encourages enrollment, you could discuss the long-term economic benefits for the country or the potential impact on the quality of education if funding is diverted. Your position is consistent, but the supporting arguments could be more sophisticated and nuanced.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'One of the most prominent reasons', 'Another persuasive argument', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between the Canadian example and the general argument could be tighter. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'higher education', 'financial burden', and 'social status'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'free of cost university education' (should be 'tuition-free university education') and 'incline taxes' (should be 'increase taxes' or 'levy taxes'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and avoid repeating basic phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'Higher education is the basic need for youngsters to be successful in their life' (article usage), 'get benefit of this facility' (missing article), and 'remain without university studies' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on article usage, prepositional phrases, and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help elevate your score.
