IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people feel that the government should pay the costs of running universities so that a university education will be free for anyone who wants it.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

There has been many debates regarding university education. People argue whether universities should be run by the government of not. In this essay, I will discuss the pros and cons of this.

If tertiary education is handled by government, it becomes more attainable by everybody, specially those lower income families. Parents need not worry on the tuition of their children. They would worry only on the boarding or transportation of their children, and the daily pocket money for food. In the Philippines, the state universities have become free during the time of President Duterte. Many students from the provinces availed of this. After graduating, they were able to help their families. Furthermore, with government in control of universities, they are able to implement standardized curriculum. There will not be much comparison among the schools. Nowadays, students would prefer one school over the other saying this school offers better education. This comparison will be eliminated if every university is under the same government.

On the other hand, if the universities are independent, it is more competitive for the students. Students will struggle to be able to get in. They will work hard in high school to be able to get a slot in their preferred university. Additionally, independent universities can get more funding with the right sponsors. They are able to gather sponsorship through different organizations and are able to improve their facilities without waiting for approvals from different government agencies.

I agree that higher education will be free, although I suggest that there will still be a strict selection process. Students must work hard to reach a certain mark so they will be allowed to stay. Otherwise, there will be consequences. This way, the government is sure that students who are in their universities are the deserving ones and not simply forced by their parents because it is free.
