Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are many people who belive that the government should fund universities so that higher education is free for everyone. I completely agree with this statement because it offers an equal opportunities and benefits to sociery. In this essay, I will support my opinion with concrete examples.

To begin with, free education gives an equal chances to all students. To explain it, free university education would allow students from low-income families to access higher education. For example, many parents in my town are unable to afford college fees for thier children. As a result, some talented student are forced to give up their studies and start working at a young age. If education were free, these student could continue thier education, develop valuable skills, and build better career. Therefore, government-funded universities could help reduce the gap between rich and poor students.

Moreover, free university education can provide significant benefits to society. To explain, more people would have the opportunity to receive higher education and develop professional skills. For example, students could become doctors, engineers, teachers, and other skilled professionals who are needed in the country. As a result, they could find better jobs, contribute to the economy, and improve the overall quality of life in society. Hence, government-funded universities can benefit not only students but also the country as a whole.

In conclusion, I reiterate that there are numerous compelling reasons that support the idea that free education not only imroves some students career, but also benefits the country. Consequently, I completely agree with this statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly addressed the prompt and maintained a consistent position throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly in your discussion of social mobility and economic contribution. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are slightly more detailed. For instance, while you mention 'doctors and engineers,' you could briefly explain how government funding specifically facilitates this (e.g., by removing the barrier of student debt). Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'As a result' effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. To improve, try to vary your linking words further, as some transitions are slightly repetitive. Additionally, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'these student' should refer back to the specific group mentioned earlier, which you have done well. The flow of ideas is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'low-income families,' 'professional skills,' and 'compelling reasons.' However, there are some minor spelling errors, such as 'belive' (believe), 'sociery' (society), 'thier' (their), and 'imroves' (improves). These errors do not impede communication but prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for common spelling mistakes. Incorporating more sophisticated, academic vocabulary would also help elevate your score, as the current range is somewhat limited to common expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'an equal opportunities' (should be 'equal opportunities' or 'an equal opportunity') and 'some talented student' (should be plural 'students'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional or passive constructions, would also be beneficial.
