Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of free university education. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas of 'national development' and 'individual opportunity' are introduced, they are not sufficiently developed or supported with specific, logical reasoning. The examples provided, such as the reference to 'western countries' and 'The Tribune', are vague and lack the necessary detail to fully support the claims. Because the response is only 199 words, it fails to meet the basic task requirements, resulting in a lower score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the basic structure. There is a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical or repetitive (e.g., 'One of the main reasons', 'Another reason'). The progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed due to the brevity of the text. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences is hindered by grammatical errors. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that connects logically to the main argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'nation educated population' instead of 'an educated population' and 'getty educated youth'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and the essay relies on basic, repetitive terms. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to express your ideas more effectively. Spelling errors, such as 'indiduals' and 'there' (instead of 'their'), also detract from the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('individuals holds'), articles ('in a universities'), and prepositions ('right for free education'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the final paragraph. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar structures prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve your accuracy.
