Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often said that government should fund the universities so that every student gets the chance to obtain university degree.

I agree with this statement because there should be equal opportunities for everyone in terms of education.

A university degree is essential in many aspects as it add up to the knowledge of students and increases their chance of getting good positions in professional field. Although other skills related diplomas are also in demand but in professional field higher education matters most. However, not everyone is able to obtain university level education due to their unaffordable tution fees. So many of students ended up quitting their studies and start doing ordinary jobs. For example one of my friends wanted to persue his career in clinical psycology but he was unable to afford the fees so later on he switched his field and did a diploma from an institute.

The government should make policies to fund the universities. This approach will enable many students to get their dream education. Furthermore, there will be more graduated people in the professional market who can boost the economy of the country. Educated people play a key role in the development and success of any country, hence in this way the government will also be benefitted by funding the universities.

Although there are universities who offer scholarships but these are limited in number, not everyone is lucky enough to get this opportunity. It is often said that there should be more seats so that more students get enrolled.

In conclusion, the universities should be funded ny the government because it will provide facility to everyone to continue his/her studies in prestigious universities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the idea of government-funded universities. Main ideas are relevant, such as equal opportunities for education and the broader economic benefits of a more qualified workforce, which aligns with the requirements of a higher band. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated. For instance, the mention of scholarships in the fourth paragraph and the conclusion about prestigious universities are introduced without full extension or deep exploration. Examples, such as the anecdote about a friend wanting to pursue clinical psychology, are provided, but the overall development shows a tendency to move quickly between points rather than fully expanding each one. This reflects a balanced performance where the task is sufficiently addressed with a clear stance, but depth of support varies across paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at a logical flow of ideas. However, the progression from one idea to the next is sometimes hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices. While basic linkers like 'Although', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used, referencing and transitions between sentences can feel abrupt, such as the sudden shift between the discussion of tuition fees and government policies. Paragraphing is utilised, though some paragraphs are quite brief and could be better integrated or grouped to enhance the overall structure. The relationships between ideas are not always transparently signaled, occasionally causing minor disruptions in the flow of reading, which keeps the organisational control at a moderate level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas relating to education, tuition fees, and career paths. There are clear attempts to use less common lexical items, such as 'professional field', 'clinical psychology', and 'boost the economy'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For instance, phrases like 'it add up to' instead of 'adds to', 'unaffordable tution fees' (spelling error and awkward collocation), and 'graduated people' instead of 'graduates' or 'graduated individuals' indicate that precision is lacking. Spelling errors, such as 'psycology' instead of 'psychology' and 'ny' instead of 'by', occur. These lexical slips and inaccuracies do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the range and precision expected at higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures with conditional and concessive clauses such as 'Although other skills related diplomas are also in demand but...' and 'The government should make policies to fund the universities. This approach will enable many...'. There are some grammatical errors in articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as omitting necessary articles ('a university degree', 'the government') and errors with pluralisation ('many of students'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally require closer attention, notably in run-on constructions or missing punctuation points. Nevertheless, the errors are not overly frequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the core meaning of the arguments despite the grammatical strain present in some of the more complex syntactic attempts.
