Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by expressing a clear position in favour of government-funded universities. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the financial burden on impoverished families and the broader societal benefits of an educated populace. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full extension. For instance, the mention of specific disciplines like medical and law is introduced but not fully connected to the main argument. Similarly, the reference to taxation lacks concrete elaboration. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide deeper explanations and more fully developed examples that directly support the central thesis throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing financial barriers and tax contributions, and concluding with a summary. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear. Transitional phrases like 'commencing with' and 'Apart from this' are used, but logical progression between sentences occasionally falters due to abrupt transitions and run-on ideas. To improve coherence, the writer should ensure that cohesive devices connect ideas more smoothly and that referencing pronouns clearly point back to their antecedents to guide the reader effortlessly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common lexical items such as 'impoverished', 'contemporary era', and 'unemployment'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word forms, such as 'benecial' for beneficial, 'higer' for higher, 'shooping' for shopping, and 'superficial' when intending to mean proficient or skilled. These lexical slips and spelling errors occasionally require the reader to pause, though they do not completely impede communication. Expanding the range of vocabulary and ensuring precise word choice and accurate spelling will significantly lift the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and result clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('an excellent approach', 'administration should take responsibilities'), incorrect verb forms ('are cannot complete'), run-on sentences with missing spaces after punctuation, and preposition errors. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writing from achieving a more consistent control of grammar. To progress, the writer must focus on sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, accurate article usage, and reducing basic grammatical lapses.
