Student answer (Band 6.0)

Education is an imperative part of the society because it gives birth to doctors, teachers, engineers, nurses and so on. Therefore, many people believe that university education should be fully funded by the government. I partly agree with this statement because free education provides equal opportnuites, but making it free for everyone may put pressure on public finances.

To begin with, it is easy to understand why university education is free for the people. Firstly, it provides equal opportunities to the students instead of their finacial status. For instance, talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds can pursue professional degrees regardless of their family income. Moreover, its also reduce debt from the student because they can start their career without investing huge amount of on education. Despite this, when people are educated from universities, then they can also serve to the society in several ways such as army, police, doctors and so on.

On the contrary, education should not be completely free for everyone owing to the several reasons. Firstly, it can be considered as a unfair distribution of resources because wealthy family may receive free education even though they can afford tution fees. Apart from this, when government start funding to all the universities it will increases finacial burden on the government. As a result, government may need to increase taxes or reduce spending on other essential services which can stop the growth of society such as infrastruture, public transportation, hospitals and so on. The government can find alternative way and they should provide full scholarships to the poor people who genuinely need it.

In conclusion, as per my opinion if government gives free eduaction to all the people, then it can increases bueden on government, so government should prioritise students from low-income families while ensuring affordable education for all.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partly agree, supporting public funding for equal access while warning that universal free tuition could strain public finances. You address both sides and offer relevant reasons, including access for disadvantaged students, reduced student debt, and the possibility of higher taxes or cuts to other services. The suggestion of scholarships for low-income students also gives your argument a practical direction. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that graduates serve society through roles such as “army, police, doctors” could be linked more clearly to the benefits of public investment. Likewise, explain how targeted support could preserve access while avoiding unnecessary subsidies for wealthy families. More developed examples and clearer links between claims and consequences would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting free university education, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the contrary,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. The progression is generally logical, and the final recommendation follows from your concerns about public spending. At times, however, linking feels mechanical because several sentences begin with “Firstly” or “Moreover,” and some connections between ideas are abrupt. The sentence about graduates serving society, for instance, follows the point about student debt without explaining the relationship. Improve cohesion by using more varied transitions and by making each sentence’s connection to the paragraph’s main idea explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “disadvantaged backgrounds,” “professional degrees,” “public finances,” and “essential services.” These choices help communicate the main arguments, and you attempt some more formal expressions. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “opportnuites,” “finacial,” “tution,” and “infrastruture.” Some collocations are also unnatural: “gives birth to doctors” would be better expressed as “produces” or “trains” professionals, while “reduce debt from the student” is not idiomatic. There is also repetition of broad terms such as “government,” “education,” and “free.” Aim for accurate spelling, natural academic collocations, and more precise alternatives such as “tuition fees” and “public expenditure.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear concession in “I partly agree … but making it free for everyone may put pressure on public finances” and a conditional structure in the final paragraph. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “its also reduce debt” needs subject–verb agreement and a possessive form (“it also reduces students’ debt”), while “when government start funding … it will increases” has errors in articles, agreement, and verb form. Other examples include “a unfair distribution” and “wealthy family may receive.” Check articles, singular and plural forms, and verb agreement, especially in longer sentences. More consistent accuracy in these patterns would make your varied sentence structures more effective.
