IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that children learn better when they are placed in classes with children of similar academic abilities. Others believe that children learn better when they are in classes with children representing a diverse range of academic abilities.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion

Student answer (Band 8.5)

It is often argued whether students should be grouped with peers of similar academic level or placed in mixed-ability classes. This essay will discuss both views before concluding that a diverse classroom is generally more beneficial.

On one hand, placing children with similar abilities has clear advantages. When the level is homogenous, teachers can tailor lessons more precisely. They do not need to slow down for struggling learners or rush past those who already understand. For high-achievers, this means they can be challenged with advanced material and maintain motivation. For lower-achievers, it can reduce pressure and create a safer space to ask questions without feeling inferior. For instance, specialized programs for gifted students or language learners in British Columbia often use this model to deliver focused support.

On the other hand, mixed-ability classes offer significant academic and social benefits. Academically, students learn a great deal from their peers. Weaker student can benefit from observing how stronger students solve problems, while stronger students deepen their own understanding by explaining concepts to others. Socially, diverse classrooms better reflect real society. Children learn to collaborate, show patience, and respect different strengths. Furthermore, ability streaming at a young age can be harmful. Labeling a child as low ability at age 10 can damage confidence and become a self-fulfilling prophecy, making it hard to ever catch up.

In my opinion, the advantages of mixed-ability grouping outweigh those of streaming. While homogeneous classes may be more convenient for lesson planning, they risk creating inequality and limiting personal growth. The ideal solution is to keep classes diverse but provide differentiated tasks within the same classroom, so every child is both supported and challenged.
