IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that children learn better when they are placed in classes with children of similar academic abilities. Others believe that children learn better when they are in classes with children representing a diverse range of academic abilities.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is no doubt that multiple academic abilities are better than a similar one. Some people opine that children can learn more in class with children of the same academic skills, while others are in favour of different skills. In the forthcoming paragraphs, both views will be discussed, and I will give my opinion.

There are several reasons why scholars should be placed with children of similar academic abilities to learn better. To begin with, in this setting, students are free from any mental pressure because they will get similar ideas from everyone; hence, they feel equal. Moreover, when the same thing hits the minds of children again and again, in this way they are able to remember the things for a long time, which is fruitful for them to learn better. For example, in a class, a teacher asked a question to students; instead of giving different answers, all students gave the same answer because of similar academic knowledge. As a result, they feel valued because of an equal level.

On the other side, there are numerous advantages of a diverse range of academic skills in a classroom. First and foremost is that a wide range of ideas, knowledge, and information helps children to learn better because they have the opportunity to develop multiple skills related to education at the same time. Secondly, in this classroom, scholars are able to engage in different activities which help them to think more; consequently, their cognitive skills will improve.

To conclude, both types of classrooms provide benefits to children, but I prefer the place where students should be in class with children representing multiple academic abilities because of this they learn several things in a single room without wasting more time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument regarding 'mental pressure' in homogeneous classes is asserted but not fully explained or supported with convincing logic. Similarly, the example provided about students giving the same answer is not a strong illustration of academic benefit. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed reasoning and concrete, real-world examples to support your claims. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other side', and 'To conclude' to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of the linking is slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the example in the first body paragraph to the concluding sentence of that paragraph feels a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'academic abilities', 'cognitive skills', and 'homogeneous/diverse settings'. However, there is a lack of variety and precision. Some phrasing is repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'learn better' and 'children'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations. For example, instead of 'same thing hits the minds', use 'concepts are reinforced'. The range is sufficient to communicate, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'scholars should be placed' is slightly unnatural in this context (students is better), and 'because of this they learn' should be 'because of this, they learn' or 'as a result, they learn'. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for small errors will help improve your accuracy.
