IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that children learn better when they are placed in classes with children of similar academic abilities. Others believe that children learn better when they are in classes with children representing a diverse range of academic abilities.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion

Give reasons for your answer, and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.5)

There is an ongoing debate over whether students learn more effectively when grouped according to their academic ability or when taught alongside classmates with varying levels of attainment. While ability-based classes can allow teachers to tailor instruction more precisely, I believe that mixed-ability classrooms are ultimately more beneficial because they promote collaboration, social development and a broader range of learning experiences.

On the one hand, grouping students according to academic ability can make teaching considerably more efficient. When pupils have broadly similar levels of understanding, teachers can pitch lessons at an appropriate pace without having to accommodate exceptionally large differences in prior knowledge. High-achieving students, for instance, can be given more demanding material rather than being held back by classmates who require additional explanation. Likewise, students who are struggling can receive targeted instruction and additional practice without feeling overwhelmed by work designed for more advanced learners. This approach may therefore enable schools to address individual academic needs more systematically.

On the other hand, mixed-ability classes offer important advantages that extend beyond academic attainment. Students can learn from one another by explaining concepts, exchanging ideas and working collaboratively. A high-performing student who helps a classmate understand a difficult mathematical concept, for example, may consolidate their own understanding in the process, while the less advanced student benefits from an explanation that may be easier to comprehend than a teacher's initial presentation. Moreover, studying alongside people with different abilities can cultivate patience, empathy and communication skills, all of which are valuable beyond the classroom.

I believe, however, that the effectiveness of either approach depends heavily on the quality of teaching. A mixed-ability class can become ineffective if teachers simply deliver identical material to everyone without providing appropriate challenges or support. Conversely, ability-based grouping can create harmful labels if students are made to feel that their academic placement defines their potential. For this reason, schools should favour mixed-ability classes while using differentiated instruction, whereby students receive tasks and support appropriate to their individual levels.

In conclusion, although ability-based grouping can make it easier to provide academically targeted instruction, mixed-ability classrooms offer broader benefits by encouraging both intellectual cooperation and personal development. In my view, the latter approach is preferable, provided that teachers are equipped to accommodate differences in students' abilities.
