Student answer (Band 6.0)

In todays era, where value of education is consistently increasing, there has been considerable debate among people who believes children learn better when placed in classes with children of similar abilities. On the other hand, some believe that they learn better when placed with children representing diverse range of academic abilities. This essay will put forth my views and give my opinion in conclusion.

To commence with, parents often believe that when their children joins academic classes with the children having similar academic abilities, they often feel more comfortable while learning. Moreover, they think their child will gain more valuable practical experience if he participate in academic activities with students having same abilities.

However, I believe when a child is placed in a school where there are children with diverse range of academic abilities, he will get exposure of different cultures, knowledge and practical experience. For Instance, when I used to be in a high school, my classmates were from different states which gave me an exposure to learn about different culture and knowledge related to different states. Moreover, it is beneficial when working in a multinational company where employees often represent possess diverse abilities and culture, one can get comfortable quickly while working with each other. In a classroom, during a discussion on a topic related to science, economic and other important topics, it becomes an opportunity for a child to know about different opinion and view point of children possessing diverse range of knowledge.

In my opinion, when a child learns with children possessing diverse range of academic abilities, it is often beneficial for his academic and professional growth due to learning about different cultures, knowledge and opinion. Consequently, it helps a child to explore and learn about and work on an ability outside of textbooks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of the first viewpoint (similar abilities) is quite thin and lacks specific examples compared to the second viewpoint. The essay would benefit from a more balanced exploration of the advantages of ability grouping, such as tailored instruction or increased confidence for struggling students. While the position is clear throughout, the depth of analysis is somewhat limited, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands. The conclusion is present but could be more effectively integrated to summarize the main points rather than just restating the opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the classroom environment and the multinational company example in the third paragraph is slightly abrupt. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'multinational company' and 'academic growth'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'get exposure of' instead of 'get exposure to' and 'represent possess diverse abilities'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'children joins', 'he participate', 'employees often represent possess') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score. More attention to proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy.
