Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some would argue that pupils can learn better when they are in classes with children of different range of academic abilities, whereas others claim that children can learn more they have classmates of similar acedamic abilities. While studying with students who have equal abilities develops cooperation among students, I believe that they can improve in a better way when they competitors in their classes.

On the one hand, having equal level of study makes students cooperarive. That is to say than when children learn with peers who hold similar capacity, they support each other without any competition, which helps them understand complicated concepts in a cooperative study environment. For instance, many children usually make groups with studnets of same intelligence level, where they work together and learn in a fascinating way.

However, I think that they cannot enhance their level while studying with studnets of similar abilities because there is neither any room for improvements nor something new to learn.

On the other hand, learners of diverse range of abilities are considered beneficial in classrooms. In other words, if children are placed in classes with pupils of a wide range of intellectual levels, they could learn the ways of improvements from each other and try to compete each other for betterment. In fact, they learn from each other's mistakes, which assists them learn better. For example, children learn quickly from a studnets who performs better than them, and when someone makes mistakes, they become alert and avoid making similar mistakes. I opine that they learn more from students who have diffre

To conclude, although children with similar acedamic abilities can develop a quality of cooperation, I maintain that to learn better they should be placed in classes with children representing a diverse range of acedamic abilites.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on how academic grouping affects learning and clearly states the writer's opinion that competition in mixed-ability classes is more beneficial. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with reasons and examples, such as the mention of students helping each other in homogenous groups versus learning from mistakes in diverse settings. However, some arguments lack full development, and the conclusion is slightly abrupt with an unfinished sentence near the end of the body paragraph (". . . diffre"). Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which helps guide the reader through the essay. However, some cohesive referencing is faulty or mechanical, and repetitive phrasing occurs (e.g., repeatedly using 'students of similar abilities' and 'diverse range of abilities'). Despite these minor flaws, the progression of ideas is coherent enough to merit a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'cooperative study environment', 'complicated concepts', and 'intellectual levels'. However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, including 'acedamic' (instead of academic), 'cooperarive', 'studnets', and 'diffre'. Word choice is sometimes imprecise, and repetition of basic lexical items is noticeable. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of spelling and word-form errors caps the lexical score at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'While studying with students who have equal abilities develops cooperation. . .' and conditional-like framing ('if children are placed in classes...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'can learn more they have classmates' (missing preposition/conjunction), 'they could learn the ways of improvements', and 'compete each other'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips are common enough to occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with a Band 5.5.
