Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to discuss both views regarding ability grouping and gives a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the essay is severely under-length at only 171 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. This major limitation prevents the student from fully developing their ideas. While the first body paragraph attempts to explain the benefits of similar-ability grouping, and the beginning of the second paragraph touches upon diverse-ability classes, the second body paragraph trails off mid-sentence and remains incomplete. Consequently, key parts of the task are only partially addressed, leading to an underdeveloped overall response. According to the band descriptors, this falls into Band 5, primarily due to the limited development of ideas and failure to meet the required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some organizational structure with an introductory paragraph and separate body paragraphs for the two views. However, overall progression is hindered by incomplete sentences and an abrupt ending where the second body paragraph trails off unfinished. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes inaccurate, such as starting a sentence with 'Because this cretira will helps student effectivley.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the lack of completion in the final section disrupts the logical flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical use of transition phrases prevents the essay from achieving higher levels of cohesion. Based on these organizational shortcomings and the lack of a conclusion, a score of 5.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited but minimally adequate vocabulary for discussing education topics, using terms such as 'academic abilities', 'diverse environment', and 'positive progress'. However, there are frequent spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'peiople' instead of people, 'cretira' instead of criteria, 'effectivley' instead of effectively, and 'varity od' instead of variety of. Less common lexical items are attempted but generally misused or misspelled, causing noticeable strain for the reader. The inadequate word control and frequent lexical inaccuracies place this response firmly in the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of basic structures and heavy reliance on incomplete or heavily flawed complex structures. For instance, the sentence 'Many peiople believe that children learn better when they placed in classes...' misses the auxiliary verb 'are'. Additionally, clauses frequently begin with 'Because' without an independent main clause, as seen in 'Because this cretira will helps student effectivley.' Punctuation and verb agreements are frequently incorrect, such as 'their is always' instead of there is. These frequent, intrusive errors cause significant difficulty for the reader and prevent the grammar from meeting the standards of Band 6. Therefore, a band score of 5.0 is assigned.
