Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—streaming by ability versus mixed-ability classes—and clearly presents a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the arguments regarding similar academic abilities are straightforward, while the exploration of mixed-ability classes tends to be slightly repetitive and lacks fully realized supporting examples, such as when mentioning career development without specific explanation. The position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for this level, though moving to a higher band would require deeper elaboration and more extended justification for each viewpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, utilizing standard cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is generally functional, though cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical, particularly in transitions between sentences. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the contrasting viewpoints. To achieve a fully higher band, the essay would need more flexible and seamless transitions that completely avoid any repetitive cohesive patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'intellectual competencies' and 'educational capacities'. However, there are noticeable word choice, collocation, and word form inaccuracies that occasionally affect precision, such as 'more better' instead of 'better', and 'basics' instead of 'basis'. Spelling is generally acceptable, and while these vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication, they reflect typical limitations at this level. Enhancing lexical control and reducing awkward collocations would elevate the resource significantly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('with child of same academic abilities', 'in classes different range'), minor subject-verb agreement slips ('several abilities in education plays'), and prepositional issues. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. A higher band would require a greater proportion of error-free sentences when deploying complex structures, along with more consistent control over articles and pluralisation.
