Student answer (Band 6.0)

There has been a discussion on improving the learning ability of children for better academic success. Many people argue that children show a better academic progess when placed with children of similar academic ability, while others think that they make huge academic progress when placed with the children of diverse range of academic abilities. This essay will discuss both the views before presenting my own perspective.

One one hand, supporters of grouping children with same academic abilities think that, this method of grouping will enhance thier confidence while studying core concepts as well as build strong teamwork capabilities which are important indicators for successful academic growth. Many children when work together in a similar group with same academic background develop co-operation to study with one another, develop focus and improved concentration. In addition, when in groups, such children develop positive learning attitude towards their curriculum and become sucessful in achieving good results as they support one another in understanding the similar subjects.

On other hand, proponents of grouping children with children of diverse range of academic abilities argue that peers learning in such a way develop analytical and practical skills which are precursor of academic as well as professional progress. Many children learning with children having different mathematical, social, environmental background can learn various concepts and develop observational and logical way of understanding the subject which will be useful for academic progress. I definitely think that children learning with peers of diverse academic backgrounds understand the concept in practical and logical way as well as have deeper cognitive understanding which not only enhnaces thier background knowledge of the subject but also improves their learning ability.

To sum up, although grouping children with similar academic abilities improve their collaborative skills and boost's their confidence, however peers learning with different learning ability children develop critical thinmking skills which improves their subject knowledge as well as improces their academic prospects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear preference for mixed-ability classes, especially in the sentence beginning “I definitely think.” The discussion of similar-ability grouping identifies confidence, teamwork and mutual support, while the opposing view is linked to analytical skills and broader understanding. These are relevant reasons, but some are asserted rather than explained: for example, the essay does not show how mixed-ability peers specifically help one another learn, or provide a concrete example to support the claims. The conclusion restates the contrast but does not add much to the argument. Developing the two sides more evenly and illustrating at least one point would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “On other hand,” and “To sum up” make the progression easy to follow, and the reader can identify your position. This meets the expectation of coherent organisation, with some flexibility in linking ideas. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and the second body paragraph moves from general claims about diverse backgrounds to your opinion without a clear supporting example. Some references, such as “such children” and “in such a way,” are broad and could be more precise. Use links that show the relationship between claims and examples, and make each paragraph’s development more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “academic abilities,” “teamwork capabilities,” “analytical,” and “cognitive understanding.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the writing less natural: “academic progess,” “sucessful,” “enhances,” and “critical thinmking” contain spelling errors, while “improves their learning ability” and “background knowledge of the subject” are repeated or imprecise. Some phrases, such as “different mathematical, social, environmental background,” are unclear. Check spelling carefully and choose more precise collocations, such as “mixed-ability classes” and “deeper understanding of the subject.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “as,” and “which.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Many children when work together” needs a subject and a correctly formed verb (“when they work together”), and “On other hand” is missing an article. The sentence beginning “although grouping children…” has an awkward contrast structure, and “grouping … improve” does not agree in number. There are also punctuation problems, including the comma after “think that” and the apostrophe in “boost’s.” Aim to make each sentence’s subject and verb clear, check agreement and articles, and punctuate clauses consistently.
