Student answer (Band 6.0)

In every sphere of life, environment plays a critical role in overall performance. Similarly, the academic performance of student depends heavily on the class environment. Among various components of it, with whom student is sharing a class matters a lot. Some people reckons that children outshines in studies while studying with other children having same intellectual level while other people oppose the idea by saying that their performance is much better while studying with fellow students whose academic performance varies from each other.

Undoubtedly, students who are academically similar scorer are grouped in one class turns to be more self-confident and extrovert. As they feel no one in the class is superior, so it acts like a comfortable surrounding for them to express their ideas. On the other hand, when students are grouped randomly most probably they could become a victim of inferiorty complex. Obviously, it affects their personality development as they might be unable to present their opinions without fear of judgemnet by fellow students.

There is also an undeniable factor that in the homogenous atmosphere, the development of student remains limited as they will never face a healthy competition. As a matter of fact, competition from fellow students results in playing best from their end in exams. Accordingly, in heterogenous atmosphere an average children get an idea of following of which path, the one which comprises of those below to them or the one who are in merit list.

I am more in favor of the class which consists different academic abilities students in comparison to one which consists only one type of students. For instance, formation of sections on the basis of scores results in all the intellectual students in one section whereas all the weak students in other sector could only reflects the idea of partiality and would render no room of improvement for both the sections.

Overall, classes should be organised heterogenously as it serves healthy competition among the students and reflection of path to be followed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for mixed-ability classes, especially in “I am more in favor” and the concluding recommendation. The discussion of similar-ability grouping is relevant: you explain that it may build confidence and make students more willing to express ideas. You also give a reason for mixed groups, namely healthy competition and the opportunity to learn from peers. However, the support is uneven. The claim that mixed classes can create an “inferiority complex” is not explored with an example, and the final example about score-based sections is difficult to follow and does not fully show how mixed classes benefit both stronger and weaker learners. Develop these points more precisely to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate discussion of the two approaches, your opinion, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the main stages, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “As a matter of fact,” and “Overall” show the intended relationships between ideas. This gives the essay a coherent progression. At times, however, connections are mechanical or the logic is not fully explicit. For example, “Accordingly” introduces a point about average children choosing a path, but the relationship to the preceding claim about competition needs clearer explanation. The final example also moves quickly from score-based sections to partiality and lack of improvement. Use more precise links and explain how each example supports the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonably broad range of vocabulary for the topic, including “academic performance,” “healthy competition,” “homogenous atmosphere,” and “personality development.” These choices show an effort to use less common and topic-specific language, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “similar scorer,” “playing best from their end,” and “reflection of path to be followed.” Some spelling errors, including “inferiorty,” “judgemnet,” and “heterogenous,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, “students with similar academic achievement” and “perform to the best of their ability” would express your ideas more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses and conditional phrasing, as in “when students are grouped randomly” and “as they might be unable to present their opinions.” This gives the response some variety, and the overall meaning is generally clear. However, errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “Some people reckons” should be “Some people reckon,” while “an average children” needs a singular or plural form, and “the development of student remains limited” needs an article or plural noun. The opening sentence also contains several missing articles. Review subject–verb agreement and noun phrases, then proofread complex sentences to ensure their parts connect grammatically.
