Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people trust that children having same intellectual capabilities if placed together learn more better rather than having classes with those having a vast range of academic abilities. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my own view.

On the one hand, if students with similar level of academic ability are put in a class together, they will enjoy their company with each other as they may be interested in same things. But those kinds of kids will lack the meaning of diversification, communication skills and various expressional experiences outside their surroundings as they will feel comfortable only in the small setting of their class. Moreover, those children will gain good scores in study, but lack extra-curricular activites. For example, if it is the class of scholars, they will all be book-worms, they could hardly think about anything else without studies.

On the other hand, children having various skills of intellectual abilities when work together, learn various skills from each other. Each individaual will try to solve the problems in their own way. They are multi-talented. Also, they are helpful by nature. If weak students are having trouble with any subject, the scholars are their to solve it. This culture brings co-operation, leadership and helping nature. Like, in Canada, we can see unity in diversity in schools, colleges and work places.

In my opinion, it's better for the development of child to be placed with children having diverse academic abilities. It helps the overall well-being of the child. Children learn feelings and cultural values of others spending good and bad times with each other.

To conclude, it is good to place children of similar academic abilities together, but not best. The best development of child's brain goes through when he sees something different.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for mixed-ability classes, especially in “it’s better for the development of child to be placed with children having diverse academic abilities.” The discussion is relevant, and the examples about scholars helping weaker students and the “class of scholars” illustrate your points. However, the case for similar-ability grouping is less fully explained: you mention shared interests and good scores, but do not show clearly how grouping by ability improves learning. Some claims, such as diverse classes producing helpful students, are asserted rather than supported. Develop each side with a specific explanation of how the arrangement affects learning, then connect your examples more directly to the question of academic progress.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. This already gives the essay a coherent arrangement. To make the links more flexible and precise, clarify some references and avoid abrupt transitions between related points. For instance, “those kinds of kids” is not a precise reference, and the move from academic ability to “extra-curricular activities” is not fully explained. The Canada example also appears suddenly and would benefit from a sentence showing how it supports the point about mixed-ability learning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “academic abilities,” “diversification,” “co-operation,” “leadership,” and “overall well-being.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “learn more better,” “expressional experiences,” and “unity in diversity” as support for a claim about classroom learning. Spelling errors such as “activites,” “individaual,” and “their” for “there” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully; precise wording will make your arguments clearer without requiring more complicated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional clauses (“if students…are put in a class together”) and subordinate clauses beginning with “as” and “if.” The overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, however, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “development of child,” which needs an article or plural form, and “Each individaual will try…,” followed by “They are multi-talented,” where the reference shifts from singular to plural. “If weak students are having trouble” also uses an awkward tense pattern for a general situation. Review article use and maintain consistent subjects and verb forms, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
