Student answer (Band 4.5)

children learn better by observation rather than adults and when children sit with the one with diverse ability they have more probality to learn better as it will make children to act like same as the others I personally learned alot while sharing company with the ones who are better in studies. If the child would sit with one who would not have been good in studies the one would never compete to get better as the child would made him assume better than him.The first scenario is not ideal as there would no competition among the children so their urge to get better would fade away with the time.If the children have company with the one who has a good hand writting so we can tell him to improve like him and if we talk about the same thing in which my child is among the ones who are not better than him he would never try to get better.when i was a child my hand writing was not good and most of the time i i got less marks than others and there was a student who had a beautiful writing and he used to get good marks and our teacher used to encourage us and we and we ised to compete to get better amd improved and if shared classroom with the one worse than me or with the same ability inwould remain unbotherwd and never tey to get better and have static thriyght that phase of age

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a clear preference for mixed-ability classes, explaining that children can learn by observing stronger classmates and may be motivated to improve. Your handwriting example supports this view with a personal experience. However, the task asks you to discuss both positions, and the argument for grouping children of similar ability is only briefly mentioned through claims that it reduces competition and effort. This does not explain why some people favour such classes or consider possible benefits, such as teaching at an appropriate pace. Your opinion is present, but the response is therefore only partially developed. To strengthen it, explain each view fairly, then state your position and support it with relevant reasons and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a recognisable line of thought: you state your preference, give reasons, and then describe a personal example. However, ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the long sequence of clauses makes the progression difficult to follow. Connections such as “If the child would sit…” and “when i was a child” are present, but the relationships between the two sides of the debate are not clearly signposted. Repetition of the same point about competition also limits progression. Organise the essay into an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Use linking phrases to show contrast and cause, and divide long sentences so each one develops a single main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “diverse ability,” “compete,” “encourage,” and “improve,” and the example about handwriting helps communicate your meaning. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the reader work to understand your point. For example, “more probality to learn better” and “have a good hand writting” do not express the ideas naturally, while “the ones who are better in studies” is repeated rather than varied. Spelling errors such as “writting,” “ised,” and “amd” also affect clarity. Build a more precise range for discussing academic grouping, motivation, and peer learning, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including conditional forms such as “If the child would sit with one…” and a relative clause in “a student who had a beautiful writing.” These attempts show some range, but complex sentences are often faulty, and sentence boundaries and punctuation are frequently missing. For instance, the opening runs several ideas together, and “there would no competition” omits a necessary verb form. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and tense consistency, as in “the one would made him assume.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using correct verb forms and punctuation.
