Student answer (Band 5.0)
Having children with a diverse range of abilities appears to offer more advantages than having children with the same abilities learning together in the same classroom. When children of diverse range of abilities are placed together in the same class learning togrther, the ones with higher abilities tends to help those with lesser abilities to understand what the teacher is teaching them. Some children appear to learn better when been taught after the teacher is done teaching and the only person that can do that perfectlly is his/her class mate but when placed together the same abilities in a class no one will be there to teach one another because they are of the same level. I Remembered when i was in the secondary school most times when a teacher is done teaching i won't understand it better, i will go and meet with my fellow classmate for him to explain it to me better and at the end of the day i will have a better understanding of what the teacher had taught us. As you can see if we are of the same academics abilities no one will there to teach one another and at the end of the day the teacher will be blamed that he is not doing or teaching us right. I understand that sometimes having diverse range can pose a negative impact in the lives those children with lesser abilities that might results to envy and hatred but i will tell you that for sure that it has more advantages than the disadvantages. Some of the advantages include one having the hunger to learn more in other to be like his or her friends who are very smart
In conclusion, having diverse range create the spirit and hunger to learn more to break the limit.
Parents, send your children where there are diverse learning skills and abilities

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear: you favour mixed-ability classes, and you give a relevant personal example about asking a classmate to explain a lesson. You also briefly acknowledge a possible disadvantage, mentioning envy and hatred. However, the discussion is unbalanced: the view in favour of grouping children with similar abilities is not explained, even though the task asks you to discuss both views. The reasons supporting mixed classes are repeated rather than developed, and the point about competition motivating less able pupils needs a clearer explanation or example. To strengthen the response, explain a benefit of ability grouping, then compare it with the benefits and drawbacks of mixed classes before reaching your conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable overall shape, moving from your preference to supporting reasons and then a conclusion. The personal school example also gives the reader a concrete point to follow. However, the progression is not consistently clear: several ideas are joined in one long paragraph, and the argument circles back to the claim that classmates can teach one another. Linking phrases such as “As you can see” and “In conclusion” help signal connections, but they do not compensate for the missing discussion of the opposing view. Use separate paragraphs for each view, followed by your opinion, and make each paragraph develop one main point. Clearer referencing would also help readers follow who is learning or teaching.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “diverse range of abilities,” “academic abilities,” “understanding,” and “advantages.” This is enough to communicate your main preference, but the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, particularly “same abilities” and “diverse range.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “lesser abilities,” “learn togrther,” and “break the limit,” which make parts of the argument less natural. Spelling and capitalisation slips, including “perfectlly” and “Remembered,” are also noticeable. Build a wider set of precise terms for grouping and learning, and check spelling and collocations so your ideas are expressed more clearly and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a conditional idea about what might happen if pupils are grouped by ability. However, complex sentences are often difficult to control, and frequent errors sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “the ones with higher abilities tends to help” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “when been taught” is an incomplete construction. In “if we are of the same academics abilities no one will there,” the sentence structure and missing verb obscure the meaning. Tense and sentence-boundary control also need attention in the personal example. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly connected subordinate clause, then check agreement, verb forms, articles, and punctuation.
